A Xanax prescription from your pharmacy will have an expiration date of one year from the date it was filled and the same would be true of any that are not sealed in the original bottle from the manufacturer, that have been exposed to light and air.

Bottles that are still sealed by the manufacturer have a 3 year shelf-life.

They don't become dangerous, after the expiration, however, they will start to degrade and lose effectiveness, so they may not work as well as they did, when they were new.
