Hello, Juan! How are you? I'm sorry about the problem you're having.
According to the NIH, the most common cause of nighttime leg cramps is low potassium levels. You should have yourself checked out to see if that's what might be causing yours. If so, supplementing potassium is a simple matter and many people do it just be eating bananas regularly.
Another possible cause would be dehydration. How much fluid do you take in each day?
Are you on any medications?
Night cramps in legs... I’ve had ‘em for a long time, but they became more frequent as I aged until I could say ‘every’ night. More like every morning at about two or three AM. They stopped after I got out of bed, but I hate to tell how much sleep I’ve lost. About three or four weeks ago, I mentioned ‘again’ it must be a vascular problem and my lower legs just weren’t getting enough blood when I was asleep. That sounded so logical, and because they went away when I got out of bed, I decided to raise the head of the bed which did. Five and a half inch blocks from a 4x4 with a top dimple from a 1 inch wood bit to keep the bed rollers on the blocks. Well! Whattaya know! Since I did that, I haven’t had a cramp. Of all the remedies over the years I read online, I never heard of that one. True, I now have to train myself to, not slide down during the night, but with a footboard for my feet to touch when I did, I could train myself to any new sleep pattern. Fortunately, for her, my wife gave up on me years ago and slumbers peacefully in her own bed. I realize now that my heart rate and blood pressure go way down when I’m completely relaxed, like asleep.
Today I did another search online and came up with acute studies of Clonidine hydrochloride in humans and how they demonstrated a moderate reduction (15% to 20%) of cardiac output in the supine position with no change in the peripheral resistance. It went on to note that at a 45° tilt there is a smaller reduction in cardiac output and a decrease of peripheral resistance. As Maxwell Smart would have said to his sidekick, (the old supine cramp trick) well, maybe not, but the most difficult ailment is simple when you stumble on the cure. Oops! Today’s Sunday. Time for my transdermal clonidine patch.
