Seratonin Syndrome

I was recently diagnosed with Seratonin Syndrome after 3 months of going from doctor to doctor trying to find out what was wrong with me -- nobody knew how to diagnose it -- heart palpitations, severe joint pain (was tested for lupus and RA) dialated pupils, very agitated and irritable, nose bleeds, increased blood pressure and pulse rate. I had been on Prozac (10 mg) for over 20 yrs. after an auto accident & subsequent surgery, Neurontin (1500-1800 mg) was added, along with Tramadol (50mg) 3-4 times a day. Cymbalta (30 mg) was added to the cocktail in December & I have been fighting symptoms that no one could diagnose. Seratonin Syndrome can be life-threatening, but I was prescribed all of these medications which did nothing but react with each other. Please be careful & do your homework before taking new drugs. Cymbalta has so many negative side effects, I don't know now it stays on the market

I need help from someone who has been experiencing burning tongue syndrome. This is very painful. I happen to get some steroid shots in the back of my head and I noticed it took away the inflammation and I did not feel as much pain. The doctor gave some steroid mouth solution but that is not helping. The pain is back. I am thinking it may be the fillers in some of my medicines I recently got filled in particular Adderall. I noticed it contains aluminum oxide and I can't believe that would be healthy. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks for taking the time to share that advice Mollie. Seratonin syndrome is definitely not something to be taken lightly, so I would also encourage anyone taking more than one medication to double check with their doctor about the possibility of such interactions.
As Mollie stated, these doctors are so busy that they can't always put a whole lot of effort into each individual case. In many ways this forces patients into a false sense of security about their medication. Then when side effects start happening, you're left to do your own homework on what might be occurring.
Hopefully our health care systems will begin to take a different approach soon. I don't think the current system will hold up for many more years if patients aren't even getting the time of day with their doctors.
Seratonin syndrome can occur from the interaction of many medications, including those medications used to treat migraines, fibromyalgia and neuropathy. Always ask questions about each drug you are prescribed & do some research yourself. Doctors today are in a hurry -- don't read the list of prescriptions handed to them & this is how mistakes are made. I live in Houston, Texas and have access to some of the best physicians in the country, but it doesn't make a difference because no matter now competent, mistakes are made and the patient suffers the consequences.
