Sulfamethoxazole-tmp Ds For Yeast Infection

I have a real bad yeast infection on my foot. Blisters, skin peeling, very foul odor. Will Sulfamethoxazole TMP DS help me?

Hi Niesha, How are you? Sorry to hear about the yeast on your foot. To answer your question though, sulfamethoxazole/tmp is generally not recommended for treating yeast infections, as it is more so intended to treat "bacterial" infections. So in my opinion, it isn't necessarily the best 1st choice option.

If you want to eradicate a yeast infection I would suggest talking with your doctor about trying an anti-fungal medication, such as Diflucan (Fluconazole), which is actually marketed for use in treating yeast infections/candida specifically.

It's also important to note that some antibiotics (including sulfamethoxazole/tmp) can also backfire and have been known to CAUSE yeast infections as a possible side effect as well. So that's something to keep in mind if you intend on taking any antibiotic for a prolonged period of time.

Is sulfamethoxazole/tmp a medication your doctor recommended or are you just trying to research different options on your own that may help?
