Rifagut 200

MY HUSBAND IS BEING ADVISED TO TAKE RIFAGUT 200 BY A PROFESSIONAL DOCTOR . HE HAS BEEN TAKING THE MEDICINE FOR ALMOST 4MONTHS NOW . IS IT SAFE TO TAKE THIS MEDICINE CONTINUESLY FOR SUCH LONG PERIODS . THE DOCTOR TOLD MY HUSBAND HE CAN TAKE IT LIFE LONG WITHOUT ANY HARM.IS IT TRUE ? HE DOES NOT HAVE TRAVELLERS DIAHREA, HE IS SUFFERING FROM SEVERE CONSTIPATION , AND HAS BEEN PRESCRIBED RIFAGUT FOR THIS . PLEASE ADVISE? UMA

Rifagut is a poorly absorbed antibiotic which is designed for the control of "small intestinal bacterial overgrowth" and it's many symptoms. 200mg a day is not a high dose and is quite safe however, what springs to mind immediately with this dose is the probability of bacterial resistance due to the initial low dose. Research is showing that a shorter course of 7 days at a higher dose of 1600mg is more effective in eradicating it altogether.
