Requip During Pregnancy Some Misconceptions

I wrote on here last year asking about the effects of requip on an unborn fetus. My RLS was beyond unbearable and the higher the dosage I took the worse the symptoms got. By the time of delivery I was up to 4 mg a day and still only got 2 hours of sleep if I was lucky. I was actually more afraid of my mental health affecting my baby at that point. I recall a few people on this forum shaming me for taking this medication and the risks I was exposing my baby to. My OB shamed me and pretty much everyone using some arbitrary animal study where the dosage was about 10 times higher than a human dosage. I just wanted to report that my daughter is one year old and is absolutely perfect in every way. Not one thing was or is wrong with her. She was born a healthy 7 pounds 8 ounce with no issues. I guess my point is that this stigma about taking medications while pregnant has got to stop. I had one lady on here tell me that she miscarried her baby at 14 weeks while on Requip but no actual link could be found, yet she felt the need to share that with me.

Hello BethAnn! Congratulations on the baby and I am very glad that she's okay!

However, the fact that some medications can be detrimental to a developing baby is not a stigma or misconception, it is true. It's just that it doesn't happen to everyone, but the risk is there.

Generally, the FDA advises that in such cases, these medications should only be used while pregnant, if the possible benefits clearly outweigh the possible risks, so the pros and cons must be carefully considered.

IE: In your case, not sleeping much at all, during your pregnancy could have been even riskier to the baby than taking the medication.

Your daughter sounds perfect and beautiful and I'm very glad you posted back to let everyone know, since things have happened, but there are no controlled human studies documenting it.

Is there anything I can help with?
