Replace Toprolxl With Diovan? (Top voted first)
Updated5 Replies
I am 53 and take 100mg Toprol Xl each morning. I exercise at least 40 minutes 5 days per week (cardio) at the lunch hour. I am the CEO of our company and do experience stress on a regular basis. I am 6'4 tall and 225 pounds. I have been taking toprol for a few years now and recently was increased to 100 mg because my BP was up. I have felt dizzy and light headed on a regular basis and I'm not sure if it's the toprol xl or something else. I take no other medication and I do not smoke or drink. Are there other options to toprol xl, and if so, what are they? Is ther something I could take for my BP that would not make me feel light headed, and drowsy?
Toprol and Diovan are both used in the treatment of high blood pressure, but they are two different types of medications.
Toprol, which contains the active ingredient Metoprolol, is a selective receptor blocker.
Diovan, which contains the active ingredient Valsartan, is an Angiotensin receptor blocker.
One may not work as well as the other in managing your blood pressure, only your doctor can advise you on which is the best for you.
As to the dizziness and drowsiness, there are common side effects of almost all blood pressure medications. They should wear off as your body adjusts to the new dosage, in a few weeks. If they don't, then you should consult with your doctor, as a medication change may be necessary.

Is there anything else I can help you with?
I purchased Toprol xl 25 from an online pharmacy. They did not require a presciption (I know its a red flag). I received several blister packs of a drug called Tolol XR 25 manufactured by Unichem in India. Each pack was stamped with a DTX number and info about mfg date and expiration and a tax related code. The actual pill were round and a reddish color (called Ponceau 4R as per label). There were no markings on the pills themselves. Is this a common practice in India not to have markings?
Try telling your doctor to reduce the dose to 75mg. You will know in a day or two if this is the trouble. However you might loose control of the BP. In that case you might consider using more that one drug combind to control your BP. I use 62.5mg of toprol xl and 120mg diltiazam Also use the brand name of toprol xl the generic is crap.
I tried the generic for toprol and it did not control my bp or rapid heartbeat. After a year of the pharmacy pushing the generic on me I finally told my doctor to put "do not substitute" and lo and behold I was also able to save $50.00 a month with my insurance company. Now I pay $15. per month.
