Refilling My Morphine - The 2 Day Rule!

Updated December 20, 2016

Since when did the pharmacies override a doctor's prescription to get a person's prescription refilled 1 day early? They call it the two day rule. The size of 1 30 mg pill is the shape of a little tiny chip and they are red. You can just touch one with your two fingers and it can go on the floor or go flying across the room! Even if you don't abuse them you can still come up short. The pharmacy will not fill them 1 day early without an OK TO REFILL THEM EARLY. All pharmacies in my area have such strict policies and being 57 yrs old and being on them for years, it can put you in withdrawal! Why don't the drug manufacturers make them bigger for us elder people to manage them better? I have a great doctor who takes good care of me and I still have to get an OK just because the way the pills are made and the 2 DAY RULE! I just went through hell over 2 pills that I was short! I spent 2 hours in my pharmacy trying to call my busy dr's office over 2 pills? HELP!!!

Hello, Sue! How are you? I am very sorry about the problem you experienced.

There are pills that are bigger, so you may want to ask your pharmacist if they can order them in for you. There are also capsules available which might be easier for you to handle.

As to the strict policies, all pharmacies have to do that, now, due to new DEA directives. I understand it's a pain, but it applies to any controlled substance.

The FDA warns that this medication carries the risk of being habit forming and may cause side effects, such as nausea, dizziness, headache, dry mouth, and constipation.

I wish I had better news for you, but I am afraid I don't.

It might be better to ask your doctor about prescribe a small supply of a different dosage that you can pick up to keep on hand, in case you run short in the future.

Does anyone else have any ideas that may help?
