Reaction To Methylprednisolone
UpdatedI was admitted in the hospital for 4 days, due to a severe reaction to poison ivy. Both of my legs were really swollen, red, painful, & hot to the touch. The doctors ran a complete CBC blood count & it was confirmed that my white blood count was high, my potassium was low, & that I also have an immune difficiency. They treated me with intravenous antibiotics & Methylprednisolone for 4 days. My swelling, redness, & pain did subside however, I am uncertain as to whether my progress was because of the antibiotics or Methylprednisolone.
I was discharged after the fourth day & prior to being released, I did inform my doctor & nurses that my entire family at home was sick with the flu. I woke the very next morning with a bad cold that turned into the flu which also turned into a bad sinus infection. Now, in addition to having the flu, my head & ears are really congested. I've been sick for 2 weeks with flu like symptoms, fever, muscle aches, nausea, dizziness, weak, & fatigue. I was very concerned because I've NEVER been this sick. Upon doing my own research, I found out that Methylprednisolone, lowers a person's immune system. Two weeks later, I returned to the same hospital & they ran another CBC and once again, my white blood count was elevated, my potassium was low & I was dehydrated. They treated me with IV fluids & had given me 2 potassium & pills to take by mouth. The doctor told me that I simply had the flu & it would run it's course. I was given a prescription strength cough syrup & Sudafed. I'm feeling worse & don't seem to be getting any better. I'm STILL running a fever between 100.5°-100.9°, body aches, coughing, chills, headache, ears & head is congested, diarrhea, & light headed. I know my body & know something is wrong. PLEASE HELP ME with any advice because I don't know what's going on. I feel like I'm slowly dying but I'm too afraid to return to the hospital.
Thank you in advance for any support or advice. I am a full time mother who's been knocked off her feet & desperately need to get back to feeling like ME again.

Hello, Susan! How are you feeling? Has there been any change? I'm sorry that you've been so miserable.
The best thing to do would be to see your primary care physician, they will be far better equipped to help determine what's wrong. The ER is really only intended to stabilize someone that is in immediate danger. There is no need to be afraid of going to the ER, but they aren't going to be able to provide you will all the help you need.
How long have you been sick, now?
Is the Sudafed and cough syrup helping, at all?
Side effects, as reported by the FDA, may include dizziness, headache, nervousness and insomnia.
What are the ingredients in the cough syrup?
UPDATE: I am feeling much better since I posted my previous comment. For over a month, I was very sick because the methylprednisone suppressed my immune system. The best advice I can give anyone, is to avoid being around people who are sick while taking this medication because you're susceptible to getting sick with the same illness, ten times worse. Even though steroids are beneficial to some, I would HIGHLY recommend finding alternative treatment and/or medications before making this your first choice.
