Rare Success Story With Chantix?
UpdatedEarly this year, in January, I went to my doctor to check on my elbow (I have "tennis elbow"). During our niceties before leaving, he asked me if I needed anything else. I said yes, please write me a prescription for Chantix. I want to quit smoking. (I smoked for almost 30 years). This was the first time I recalled, really wanting to quit. I thought about it in the past but heard way too many stories of bad experiences while taking Chantix; some from folks I work with. My doctor wrote out a presciption for the first round (4 weeks worth) and the second round maintenance month (another 4 weeks). I went straight to CVS to get the prescription filled.
I went home, broke the news to my husband (he smokes too) and started the pills the next day. I'm not sure why it worked for me, but in less than 2 weeks, I quit smoking. I did not have any strange, crazy dreams or any depression or suicidal thoughts. In fact, I slept like a baby. My follow up with my doctor was 3 weeks later, to check on my elbow. I was proud of myself for being able to tell him I was now a non-smoker.
6 months later, I can attest to all of you, that I have not smoked since January. I no longer have the urge or desire; in fact, I find the smell of cigarettes very offensive. My husband still smokes but has cut down a lot! He no longer smokes in the car, whether I'm with him or not. He no longer smokes in the house, with exception to his man-cave or in the garage.
I hear the horror stories about bad experiences with Chantix but hope there are successful, positive ones like mine. My husband had his concerns but is amazed and proud of me that I was able to quit.
Oh, one "side effect" that I did experience was gaining 10-15 lbs. since I quit smoking. I'm working on that....

Awesome! Congrats, I'm very glad that it worked for you and thank you for sharing your success story.
It's not really that everyone has Chantix horror stories, it's just that most people don't think to do what you did and share the positive ones. The people hunting for a place to post online are usually those that have some problem or complaint.

The 10 to 15 pound weight gain is normal when someone quits smoking and occurs with or without assisting medications. Nicotine acts as a stimulant, so while you're smoking, it's boosting your metabolism and making your burn off more calories. Once you stop smoking, your metabolism slows back down a little.
Stepping up your activity level and watching your diet should help with that.
Is there anything I can help with?
