Rn Addicted
UpdatedI'm here to try and help someone because I'm in the same boat as everyone here. I started using percs 10 years ago and got off them about 6 years. Well, I started back up 3 years ago. I am taking up to 15/day for 3 years consecutively without missing one day. I'm not going to go into the drawn out story about why I started, like everyone else here, the point is "we're all addicted". So I'm writing now because I'm in day 2 of slow detoxing. 15 a day for 3 years solid is not easy, however, I can say to those of you who are looking to lessen with the withdrawal symptoms should try this. It's not for everyone because a lot of people will stop cold turkey, which can be dangerous, depending on the individual. I'm a nurse who has a career teaching at a university, I need to get my life back without these on my mind 24 hrs/day. I would wake up 2 times a night, every night, because I would feel my body withdrawing if I hadn't taken any percs within 3 hours. So I had to take them during the night too. Haven't had a full night sleep in a few years. I'm sick of it!! I had 16 percs left and thought it was time!! I took the 16 and cut them all in half. Rather then taking a few every 2-3 hrs, I took HALF. Then cut it down to half every 5 hrs, then half every 7 hrs, and so on. Believe me it's not easy because you still feel your body withdrawing, but nothing like you would if you completely stopped cold. It's helping!! For those of you who are running out of percs and worried where you're going to get the next batch, NOW is the time to take what you have left and cut them in half and start your journey. One other thing I can suggest that may not be for everyone, I went to my doc to get something to sleep and stop the restless leg withdrawals that comes with detoxing. He gave me Amitryptaline in low dose. this is not a med that is addictive, nor does it give you a high. In low dose, it will calm your body before you go to sleep. Sleep is key when trying to detox, and as everyone here knows, there is no sleep at this difficult time. So why not make it easier for you if you can. Stay away from the suboxone if you can. This drug is addictive and it makes no sense to detox with another addictive drug. I know the feeling of cold turkey as I did it last time. Good luck everyone and know that if you're on this website reading these posts', then you're ready to give it up.

Hello, Debra! How are you doing? Are things still progressing well?
You are on the right track, I think. In the U.S. that is actually the most recent preferred taper method. They usually have someone start to space the doses farther apart, while gradually lowering them, at the same time.
The FDA lists the typical withdrawal effects as possibly including rebound pain, depression, headache, fever, chills, and diarrhea.
