Reaction To Prednisone (Top voted first)
UpdatedHi My daughter is 15 and was prescribed prednisone 20mg for inflammation brought on by an upper respiratory infection. She took the first dose about 1/2 hour after a meal and within 1/2 hour, she was experiencing severe abdominal cramping and nausea. She was able to vomit and it was clear with a few solids but mostly clear. I spoke with the doctor after the pharmacist recommended that it might be too much for her. The doctor said to continue and he called in anti-nausea. I really want to stop because she was so violently ill. Since it was only the first dose, will she be okay to stop. I know that it is my decision to do so but I just would like a second opinion.

I'm am so glad you posted the question. I thought that maybe I was overreacting. I took one 50mg pill of prednisone before bed last night and when I woke up I couldn't see at first, then it got blurry, finally my vision returned. It seemed like a long time, but this incident took approx. five scary minutes. I am supposed to take two more in prep for a contrast MRI today along with 50mg of Benadryl. I am only taking the Benadryl. Am I wrong? I think you made the right choice, I don't know; I do know that she is your daughter these are my eyes. There is a myriad of other drugs out there that can probably produce the same results, in my experience at least.
I am very sorry about the problems that have been experienced.
However, those can be normal side effects of the Prednisone. I understand that no one wants to be made more miserable by a medication that's supposed to help solve their problem, but unfortunately, that's how it works sometimes.
The best thing to do in such cases is to speak to the prescribing doctor about it to learn as much as you can and make an informed decision as to whether or not the possible benefits outweigh the risks.
In the case of the URI that you're daughter had, if she's taken an antibiotic and isn't having trouble breathing, then it will likely go away on it's on before too long. But only her doctor can say for sure whether or not she really needs to take anything else. But yes, there won't be any issue with stopping after just one dose, those problems generally only arise after someone has been taking it for several weeks. If that is the case, then a slow taper is required.
You also may want to keep the other side effects in mind, when making your decision, because steroids can cause severe acne, fluid retention and weight gain, which would create other health problems.
As to taking one for the scan, you should speak to your doctor about that, if you aren't going to continue taking it. If you have inflammation, it could affect how much they can see on the MRI.
Are there any other questions or concerns?
