Questions About Tramadol

I was prescribed Tramadol by my primary physician for years. I was in a motor vehicle accident and was rear-ended by a heavy duty truck (cement mixer). It caused severe back pain and sciatica. My pain is constant. I was able to live my life while on tramadol. Then the opioid scare hit and my physician told me she could no longer prescribe them and offered no help to get me of them. Isn't it the obligation of the physician to wean the patient off or offer an alternative? I did not want to take anything stronger because I could not function. My physician gave me the name of a pain clinic but did nothing to assist me in getting an appointment. I called them and the soonest appointment is 2 months out. I have been thru hell going from taking two 50 mg tablets 3 times a day to nothing. I am so frustrated with my physician and the lack of help and resources available in my area. I called other pain doctors and was told that they have to review my medical records first then they will let me know if they will accept me as a patient. I'm at my wits end. Any advice is appreciated.

No, unfortunately under current U.S. law, they are not obligated to treat you, in any way, unless you are in immediate life-threatening danger. They can cut you off, or stop prescribing medications, at any time they feel appropriate. I know this information doesn't help you, I am just telling you how things currently work.

The FDA warns that Tramadol carries the risk of being habit forming and may cause side effects, such as nausea, dizziness, dry mouth, constipation, and headache.

The review of records is normal, most doctors will want to do so, especially before prescribing a controlled substance. You should also make sure not to ask them for a specific medication, when you call them for an initial important, since that may lead them to think you are drug seeking. It is best to let your medical records speak for you.

How are things going? Have any of them agreed to take you on as a patient?
