Question About Percocet 5/325! Please Help!

Hello,

I am having back surgery on Tuesday (it's Friday night now) because of extruded discs. I was told that I could not take any Ibuprofen for the pain, so they prescribed me Percocet 5/325 to help with the agonizing pain. It says to take 1 every 6 hours and that the maximum daily dose is 4. The issue is that after just a few hours the pain comes back full force (the pain never fully goes away...) and I end up taking one every 3-5 hours depending on how active I am and how painful it is. For instance, today I took one at 9am, 1pm, 6pm and 10pm because of the amount of pain I have been in.

Is this safe for such a short period of time, if I end up doing something like this on a daily basis? I only plan on taking it if it's absolutely necessary, but I've been in horrible pain for awhile now. I'm sure they will prescribe me Percocet for after surgery too, but I just want the pain to go away but I don't want to kill my liver. Over the past 2 years or so, I have regularly been taking Ibuprofen and/or Acetaminophen.

Thank you ahead of time for your help!

Hello, Matt! How are you?

The danger to your liver occurs with taking high amounts of the Acetaminophen, especially over a long period of time, the risk with regular use amounts is minimal, though there is still some slight risk. But generally, the FDA now recommends making sure that you take no more than 3,000mgs in any 24 hour period for safety.

This is a narcotic analgesic, so it has the potential to be habit forming and may cause side effects, such as nausea, dizziness, drowsiness, dry mouth and constipation.

Is there anything else I can help with?
