Generally pills that fit this type of description are associated with ecstasy. Did you end up asking your friend what it is that he took?

I did come across some details regarding the Identification and there are purple monkey ecstasy pills that do exist with a 'paul frank' monkey's face imprinted on one side of the pill. You may want to have a look at this page to see if it appears to be the same pill that your friend took:
