Purbac, Is It Safe As An Acne Treatment?
UpdatedMy son has just turned 13 and has developed, what I thought, were only zits on his forehead, however our family doctor says he is developing Acne and has prescribed Purbac. I am a little concerned as I do not like anti-biotics...does anyone have any info or side effects of this drug?
Purbac is a combination antibiotic containing Sulfamethoxazole and Trimethoprim.
Some of the most common side effects include: nausea, drowsiness, diarrhea and skin rash.

Have you tried any other options, such as over the counter treatments?
I've used Purbac for years to control my problem skin and have found it to be very effective.
the use of antibotic s should only be used in cases of abcessed boils, antibotics destroyed normal bacteria in the stomach an intestines, Acne is a trying prombem for teens, astringents as witch hazel to wipe skin off after washing will help, if your son has difficult blackheads tell him to place a hot towel just as hot as he can stand on his face for 5 minutes before trying to remove blackheads this opens the pores more, so sores are not developed, tell him cut down on chocolate an increase his diet esp. with tuna in spring water helps skin an hair, check your son s ears on the inside as pimples an blackheads form there too, a large hairpin can be used to extrude these
The low doses you need to control the skin infections don't normally negatively affect the helpful gut bacteria.
I am a 37-year-old male with acne problems for the last 25 years. I have tried everything to fix the problem but with no luck. Then I tried Purbac for about 14 days and it cleared it up totally, honestly no acne what so ever. About a week, after I stopped using the purbac the acne was slowly coming back. I then started to use Purbac nonstop and no acne or even a hint of it popping up again. My skin even feels stronger and much healthier.
Now my question is how long I can use Purbac with what safe dosage so that it does not do harm to my body? I do understand that any antibiotic does have side effects.
Andre - I have the exact same situation. Im 29 still get mild acne but have found purbac to be extremely effective ie when i take it acne clears within days, when stop acne returns within days. Im very health orientated so dont like being on antibiotics so i also would like to know how long its safe to stay on purbac for? And also whether there are any long term side effects?
I am currently taking purbac, and I have to agree that it works wonders. I have a soft, clear and delicate skin because of purbac.
For how long can purbac be used for acne without harm to the body?
I have been using purbac for two weeks now with no effect. In fact - it actually seems like it has the opposite effect. It seems as though it makes the acne worse! Do you think I should stop taking them or should I continue?
i am on purbac for about 3 weeks and i just wanted to know is it possible that one of the side effects could cause itchiness all over my body? since im on purbac ive experienced it about 3 times?

Antibiotics are certainly not something one can 'live on' as this can lead to severe internal flora inbalances which can lead to candida (a very anoying and painful disease) and even worse problems. I've had severe body acne and followed the instructions on acne.org which is to use benzac (a benzoyl peroxide gel) after showering and then using a hydroxy acid gel over it after 15mins. This restores your skin's natural oil balance after the drying out and killing of bacteria from the benzac. Don't use soap but rather a shower gel instead to maintain your skin's oil balance. You can use purbac for a month to kill off the acne causing bacteria but after your skin's natural oil balance has been restored, it should be a permanent cure.
Woodstock 2009. Chocolate does not cause acne!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi I am 36 years old and struggling with mild acne and are currantly on accutane for 2 months now but find thats its affecting my eye sight it makes it blurry how long after i stop accutane can i use burbac? and for how long can i use it without it affecting my body?
Hey me and my sis started, using purbac 480mg twice a day, both of us are experiencing what feels like burning skin, and hers itches. Aproximately how long do you think this will last??? We've only been using it for under a week and can't sleep due to the irritation. Mines particularly irritating around the eyes
I went on Purbac Tablets for about 6 months for Adult acne. I had big cysts on my forehead and chin area. I am 36 yrs. When i stopped my skin was BEAUTIFULLY clear for about 4 months then i slowly started breaking out again. Big cysts on my forehead...I am now back on Purbac again...wondering if it really does help in the Long Run.
Theresa, the reason why you are experiencing blurry vision whilst using Accutane is because this medication causes dry eye...Accutane can actually interfere with the tear film that covers the cornea.

Re: Leela (# 31)
Agreed, sugar and dairy.
Re: Dr Erlacher (# 20)
Sugar in chocolate causes acne so yes a chocolate can cause pimples. Same applies for sugar laden drinks and food. Dairy products can also affect your skin. I have found that these have affected my skin for the past 30 years but it may differ for yours. Fresh air, a little sun and lots of drinking water helps the skin.
Re: Dr Erlacher (# 20)
Could be the dairy and sugar not choc itself. I always have a breakout after consuming chocolate
