Pulsating Pain In Gums

Updated November 22, 2015

So I found out that I may have a gum infection and my dentist prescribed me with Amoxicillin in hoping the infection would ease down, as there is a small swelling on my top left side gum and it hasn't seem to settle down.

The pain in my gums is excruciating as it comes on in a pulsating form within the two to three teeth parts along the gumline and it will last for about 30-50 seconds and then it will go away.

This sort of pain has been ongoing for months going onto a year and I have been to three different dentists and they give me the same answer that its a gum infection? But can a gum infection last this long?

I have tried everything of what the dentists has told me to help me relieve the pain but the pain still occurs on a on and off everyday basis, Sometimes what triggers the pain more is when I eat or drink something cold and warm.

Please help me to know what I have,
I know its not a toothache as I know what feeling that is.

Hello, Camilla! How are you? I'm sorry that you're in pain.

I'm not a dentist, so I can't give you a definitive diagnosis, but having had many, many adventures over the years with my own teeth/mouth that finally culminated in my getting dentures, (Which was a HUGE relief, I must say!) it sounds like you may have a nerve exposed.

As explained by the NIH, an exposed nerve could account for the throbbing and the sensitivity. It may even be nerve damage. At one point you may have had an infection that caused the swelling, but that can quite easily damage a nerve, or a small cavity could leave one exposed and as I well know, some of those lumps/swellings from infections never go away.

The FDA lists the typical side effects of this antibiotic as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache, non-allergic skin rash and diarrhea.

Did any of these dentists do x-rays?

Are you on any medications?
