Prolia & Hair Loss (Page 13)

Updated

I've just recently had my second Prolia shot. So far so good...a little back pain. I continually have stress fractures on my feet and have also taken fosamax. My current problem is hair loss & I wondered if anyone else was having that problem?

It's only one molecule of Prolia that stays in our bodies and it is unable to harm us any more than an aspirin we had 30 years ago. Prolia has a half life of 16 days. In 16 days 1/2 of the Prolia is gone from your body so that by the time we reach six months, there is only that one molecule left. That does not mean in the least that the side effects of Prolia leave with the drug. They can and sometimes do last for years on end. My hair is horrid and I loved the description one lady wrote about her nails being like onion peals. It takes the worst of our DNA and uses it against us. When we have to have cataract surgery, thyroid surgery, jaw problems and teeth replaced, that does not fall within the 6 months that the drug is active in the human body. It is a long haul to get the body back to pre-Prolia. How long? I'm not really sure and as humans we are all different. Some people have zero problems with this drug while it creates havoc for a lot of us. One thing I believe our medical community needs to clearly understand is that Prolia is to be used only when ALL OTHER drugs have FAILED. Drs. are now using it first. It would seem that Amgen has done a wonderful job of advertising. You will get much better each and every month, little by little. That I can promise but I don't know where the real end is. I believe I am close but not there yet. I lost 68 pounds in 3 months with only one injection and that was just the beginning. Be well~

I want anyone reading this post to understand that the people who have been given these shots are supposed to continue with the shots forever! My Doctor never, ever mentioned the side effects or that I had to stay on the shots. The pain I am in now is awful. It is one leg starting at the lower buttock and continuing down the back of the leg just past the knee. I live on Advil now. I just stopped the shots on my own. I was sick of the doctors acting as if the loss of my hair didn't matter one bit. Money, money, money! We all know the kick backs are huge!

Like you I was recommended to continue with Prolia despite them seeing how ill I was and the loss of all of my hair and other bad side effects. They suggested that it was not due to Prolia but other reasons. How ridiculous to even suggest it when it is obvious what caused all this misery. I felt like my life as I knew it was finished, and the pain and misery continues eight months after the one and only shot.

I read that 3 years was the usual timeframe...so 6 shots. I took 2 and stopped. My last shot was March 2015. My hair still doesn't grow much...I colir it and I can go two full month easily without the roots needing treatment. My immube system is horrible. U got that bad flu twice this season. I had the flu shot. I know they saud the shot was not effective this year, but I still feel Prolia has left my immune system weakened. This is horrible. I will not take any other drugs for osteoporosis...they have all been bad

Two weeks after my first Prolia shot I began experiencing hair loss...I am continuously shedding hair with the bulb attached. Hair has noticeably thinned. Am no longer using a blow dryer and use a large tooth comb instead of a brush... trying to hold off what I hope is not the inevitable.

I'm 70 also, and after 2 Prolia injections, I decided to risk broken bones rather than take anything for Osreoporosis. I had lovely hair, and after all the breakage and hair loss, it still barely grows. I had 2 Prolia shots...the last was March, 2015. Three years later, my hair is still hardly growing, my immune system is weak, my jaw cracks all the time, and I think it was responsible for my hearing loss...though of course I cannot prove any of this. Very sad situation.

Yes- just had one shot 6 months ago. My hair is falling out. My Dr says Prolia doesn’t do this. I think she is wrong. Wondering if I should take another shot now.

Re: Bubbles (# 248) Expand Referenced Message

Do not believe your doctor. There are hundreds of messages all stating that hair does fall out in many cases after a Prolia shot. I lost all of mine within 4 months. Now after 9 months I have fluff growing, not hair, and am told it will come after this has grown. The drug is a poison to certain people. The side effects I had were dreadful and still have some which I am told may never leave my body. Just one injection ruined my life.

The only way to know for sure about your hair is to see a Dermatologist. That Dr. will confirm if you hair is capable of growing again or not. As with many ladies with just one injection, the answer is NOT. It will not grow back. Some are buying expensive wigs to look normal again. It also affects fingernails and the best description I have read on this site was that 'my nails are like onion peels'. I really do not know why this happens but it does and it has happened to me too. My hair is a NOT. It's all over everything. It's worse than having a dog that sheds. Be well~

You will get better in time. Only one injection of Prolia is out of the human body by the 6th month. Just because Prolia is gone, does not mean in the least that side effects of this poison are gone with the drug. They can and do last a long time and some are permanent as in death. I sincerely hope you have documented your experience with Amgen and the governing body of your country that controls medications. In the US it's the FDA. They have a toll free number if you look for it. Also, Senators have more influence over the FDA than we, the people, so you may want to tell your story to yours if you have any. Be well~

Would be interested to know what the specialist said. I too am also totally upset about the rapid hair loss that is occurring. My scalp also itches and tingles which adds to my misery because I can't scratch it or more hair will come out.

Yes. I had one shot six months ago. My hair is falling out like crazy. The strands have the roof attached. I am extremely distressed

Yes. My Dr said she couldn’t find any info about Prolia making hair fall out which is why I asked this group. Apparently the industry is ignoring us. My hair is falling out with the roots attached. I am distressed. I have decided not to take anymore injections. I am taking tons of vitamins. D and calcium.

Re: Bubbles (# 254) Expand Referenced Message

Amgen denies that Prolia causes hair loss but my Consultant dermatologist told me that he has seen patients who have had this problem with Prolia, including myself. We, as patients, know that it is Prolia but money makes them deny it as it would certainly cause a massive drop in sales should they have to declare under side effects that it causes total hair loss in some cases. People would not take the risk. Hence the repeated denials. My hair is growing back slowly, but a different texture which I hope will change eventually. It will of course take years. In the meantime, I have had to pay out for wigs.

I have been off prolia for around two years. After the second inj. is when I noticed horrible hair loss! My hair has always been thick and naturally curly. It too was my better feature! Now the hair loss has stopped however I don’t see much regrowth at this point. It is also very dry and brittle. Immediately after the shot I had severe itching for approximately 2 to 3 weeks. Also hip pain was beyond ridiculous! My immune system has also suffered and I seem to catch everything going around. I have another bone density coming up in May and will see the difference if any since I stopped. I must also note the reason my oncologist recommended this I’m guessing it’s because I am a breast cancer survivor. However I only had a lump ectomy with radiation. I did not have chemo. Not sure if this helps anyone considering but I have declined anymore for two years. More than likely I will decline again after my bone density as I have an appointment with my oncologist after. Also note that I work out five days a week with various routines. I do walking elliptical and weight resistance training. My point is with my healthy diet I try to also do most days, side effects of this inj. greatly affected me. After reading all of the postings it seems it doesn’t discriminate between Active and non-active or mostly healthy diet people. Very interesting how deep into the pamphlet hair loss is noted.

I also have small cataracts on both eyes however they are not growing. These did not appear until after my shots started. I appreciate all of the information about the hair growth. I knew that at some point your hair can be on a six-month cycle. I was not aware of a seven-year period. So I’m hoping I only have five more left for my hair to possibly return to its thickness. I am not losing anymore since I stopped, however, what I lost has not returned. I will look up this Saw palmetto and read on it. I have also started collagen over a year ago and extra vitamin D with my multivitamin. Sometimes it’s very difficult to make the right decision on taking care of yourself. It seems to me like we’re all in a rock and a hard place.

Yes. One shot six months ago and my hair is falling out in handfuls I won’t take anymore or I will be bald.

I had my first shot of prolia in February. My hair started fallin out almost immediately. My doctor refuses to acknowledge it as a side effect, but it's the only thing in my life that changed. I'm reporting it to the FDA and recommend everyone who has had a similar experience do it too. For years after the chemo drug taxol came out, women who reported the loss of their nails were ridiculed, not it's listed as a major side effect. More studies need to be made. In the meantime, I'm hoping the hair loss isn't permanent; I would never have taken the drug if I knew I'd go bald (fyi - I have been bald due to chemo, but my hair grew back from that, this is any body's guess).

I had 2 Prolia injections...the last in March 2015. My hair is still bad. It is barely growing. I color it, so I can tell how fast it's growing...about half as fast as it did. It's brittle.

Where in the info is hair loss mentioned? I missed it somewhere or would not have taken the shot
