Prolia - Abundance Of Cavities From The Shot
Updatedafter my last dental hygiene appt. my dentist came in and stated the nurse who cleaned my teeth saw many cavities. they did x-rays. i suddenly have 9 cavities & 2 root canals. i never had this before. i contacted amgen, who produce the shot. they said no one has had trouble w/their teeth, just jaw problems. if anyone has had this type of problem, please write in. thank you
How long of a time period was there between when you received the Prolia and the dental appointment?
Are you on any other medications?
The reason I'm asking is because many medications can cause dry mouth, which can allow the bacteria that would normally be washed away by saliva to remain on the teeth and cause higher and faster rates of decay, than normal.
Therefore, it may not necessarily be directly related to the Prolia.

I have not had any cavities in year. After starting Prolia, I suddenly had a abundance of cavities that required treatment.
Hi, I have had issues with grinding and clenching my jaws to the point that it is difficult for me to eat. i have lost about 10 lbs but my physician says there is no connection between jaw bone pain, clenching and Prolia. I am afraid for the 2nd injection, I am 55 years of age have had 3 spinal surgeries. My Dentist refuses to say or write anything concerning this medication.
I have been having promise shots for 4 years now and lately I have been having numerous cavities..promise is the only prescription drug I am on how.
I am 70 years old female.
I have had 3 prolia injections so far but have stopped due to going to have tooth extractions as my 2 bottom teeth are very loose. I never had this problem prior to taking prolia but the doc has said it may have happened anyway. Both dentist and doc say extractions won't affect being on prolia but I have heard different so now I'm confused.
Hi...regarding this Prolia shot for Osteoporosis, as noted below I too suffered from cavities...not as many as some people. I talked to the pharmacist about it and they never heard of any issues with teeth...although the pharmacist asked me if I was taking any extra calcium supplements other then what I get from my food...well I was when I was younger all the time and I must admit that in the last perhaps 10 yrs no, I stopped as I ate a lot of yogurt, and I figured that I got enough calcium from the food I ate...so when I went for my Shot a couple of weeks ago I asked my doctor and she suggested that yes I take extra calcium, she said preferably with magnesium as it get into your system quicker..I am a 70 year old female and my doctor suggested I take 1500mg calcium, 500 - 600 mg as a pill/liquid, rest in diet.
So I have started that and will see if it does make a difference...I have been taking Prolia shots for 4 years now...it is the only thing I don't have side effects from and it is the only prescription medication that I am on...Because I have issues swallowing those huge calcium pills I can take the chewables and I have just started taking a blueberry flavor liquid consisting of calcium and magnesium with Vitamin K2 and Collagen...Brand is Nature's Way...not too expensive...taste well not bad...lol
I take this just before bed and it also seems to help me fall asleep and stay asleep too!
I was very apprehensive about taking prolia..I had pain in feet right after the shot, but it went away after a few weeks.. 2 months after getting the shot , I needed a root canal.. Don't know if prolia is to blame..
This is me had two bad theeth pulled and seems like im not healing well my face is very soar and painful.
Yes I have had problems! I am sitting here in the most excruciating pain on my jaw/cheek...it started on Thurs an I went to dentist yesterday (Fri.) He says my gum is very infected. Gave me amoxicillan and prescription moutheash. Have had 3 of the Amoxicillin, used mouthwash but so far no change. I just want to cry. If you Google "Prolia and teeth problems you will see others are suffering as well. Oh I also had a loose tooth that had to be pulled. My teeth were great! All this started after my first shot Jan 11 2017. Good luck to you!
The drug company is not telling you the truth about your dental problems because I reported mine to them personally. I lost all of my top teeth and now in the long and expensive process of implants. My teeth just broke off at the gum line. It is awful. Also had an emergency hernia surgery two weeks after my Prolia injection. Never again.
I just had another appointment with my doctor and he got mad because I won’t take another Prolia injection. I told him that I had lost all of my top teeth and do want want to loose my bottom teeth. He refuses to believe that it affects your teeth. I told him that some dentist won’t work on your teeth until while you have Prolia in your system. I am now going to look for another doctor. My implants are costing a fortune. The drug company is not telling the truth about no one having dental problems because I called them personally. Never again will I take this poison drug.
Re: Linda (# 12)
I knew from the get go I should not have had this shot! Why don't we listen to ourselves at times?? ARG! I do not trust any of the drug companies! It's all about the $$$!
Re: Linda (# 12)
That is the trouble, the varied time from date of injection to when the problem begins. My wife took fosamax, developed side effects, disappeared when stopped. With prolia it is supposed to last 6 months.4 months after the 3rd injection developed pain over 1 tooth.2 dentists could find nothing wrong. Finally a boil developed. Treated it conservatively. When we reported this to the prescribing doctor, he scolded her for not taking the 4th injection, said there was no correlation. The no of people on prolia with teeth problems is about 1 in 8. That is significant. If I had not read all the negative reviews and given support to my wife we really would be in trouble.
Re: Margonot (# 14)
I wonder how much kick back that Dr. is getting for getting woman to get the shot? I get sooooooo angry when Dr.s say stuff like this! Did they have the shot and suffer from the side effects? I also got small patches of skin that bleed easily right after getting the shot!
Re: Holly (# 10)
When my wife developed her cavity she took antibiotics PLUS fucidin ointment and creme which she massaged into the affected tooth and surrounding gums with a Q tip. This is prescription so your doctor may not cooperate if you told him your purpose for wanting it.We used it 15 years ago when her implanted tooth oozed pus.It cleared after 10 days treatment.Massage was every 4 hours during day and when she woke up at night.Fucidin is very powerful, killing all bacteria (good and bad) so it has to be applied only over the affected area. She developed a yeast infection in her mouth on this occasion which she treated with boric acid rinse (again follow carefully as it is toxic)margonot
Re: Heat (# 6)
Docs and dentist are programmed from the manufacturer to say there is no connection.Too many negative reviews to ignore the obvious.
Re: Verwon (# 1)
I have dry mouth and my teeth have just gone to pot. Many fillings and two root canals last year. I took one Prolia shot but don’t think it effected my teeth. Just my hair. It is falling out and getting so thin. I’m not sure what to do about it.
YES! I've had 2 loose teeth that had to be pulled and 2 absesses!
My 29 year old daughter with Special Needs has Osteogenesis Imperfecta & early signs of Osteoporosis. She has had two injections of Prolia as recommended by her PCP, the 2nd and the last one I will ever have her get was in July of this year!!!! We have now been referred to a Special Care dentist for treatment of 13 cavities all of a sudden!!! Option 1: pay $5,000+ to have them taken care of all at once under sedation or Option 2: many trips to fill 2-3 at a time and $2,500. Meanwhile, the Prolia remains in her system for another 5-6 months!!

The drug company is not telling the truth about dental problems and Prolia. I have gone to the dentist every 6 months all of my life. After Prolia my teeth starting breaking off at the gum line. Lost all of my top teeth and got implants. Now I am dealing with 2 loose teeth on the bottom. I am just sick about it. I have spent so much money already on these implants. Please do not take Prolia. You will regret it.
