Profuse Sweating And Medicinal Body Odor

Updated

Have been on Eliquis for about 4 weeks as a result of an AFib event and ER visit, turning into a week hospital stay. Terrible side effects. I sway between teeth-chattering coldness to profuse heat and sweating. My bedding is soaked through every night. But, worse of all is this funky medicinal body odor that I can't escape, even with 3-4 baths/showers a day. It's so disgusting that it makes me sick to my stomach. Also have awful metallic taste in mouth, so all food or drink tastes terrible. Along with the fatigue, insomnia, memory problems, these effects are making this drug intolerable for me. I haven't read of others having the body smell though. Is anyone else experiencing this?

I also am trying to determine the source of body odor since I started taking Eliquis along with Flecainide....it has to be one of those two. I have only been on these two new meds for a weeks. I am going to request that I switch to asprin instead of Eliquis.

@Elgee,

Oddly enough, I'm not finding that body odor or any related terminology is listed as a side effect of Eliquis. However that doesn't necessarily mean it can't happen, especially given the number of other side effects you reported having. So I think it may be best to just contact your doctor for a second opinion and from there determine if Eliquis is still right for you. You might also wish to file an adverse event report detailing your experience to the FDA via their MedWatch program at: fda.gov/Safety/MedWatch.

ON A SIDE NOTE: Post #1 had mentioned taking "Flecainide" [a drug with related uses to Eliquis] - and when I look up its side effects, NIH.gov lists: increased sweating, passing gas, memory problems, trouble sleeping, loss of strength, etc...pretty much every symptom you noted above from taking Eliquis...Just something to take into consideration I suppose. But I'd imagine it would probably be difficult to determine if all heart or blood pressure related drugs could cause these types of side effects.

Hope this helps!

Thanks for your reply. I'm now beginning my third month on Eliquis, and am losing some side effects, but gaining others. The medicinal body scent and confusion have diminished (thank heavens), but the fatigue and nausea live on. Now, however, my feet and legs are swelling terribly. It diminishes only slightly overnight. For the past week, my feet and ankles have been at least twice normal, legs to the knee are very bad also - very hard to the touch and feel like they'll burst open! Also take Furosemide, but that has done nothing to relieve this pressure. Don't have a single pair of shoes or slippers that will fit over the swelling.

My cardiologist refuses to believe any of these symptoms are the result of Eliquis. He will not discuss specifically the results of any tests (echocardiogram, nuclear stress, chest X-rays, lung capacity) I've had done, and just says I'm in his hands and he knows what needs to be done. He is now even refusing to release these test results to my primary care physician also, so I'm very concerned there's something not on the up and up with him. My PCP has requested the records 5 times in the last 3 weeks, but cardiologist won't produce them. Other than the Eliquis effects, I feel fine - no unusual heart rhythms, no pain, no shortness of breath now, but doctor adamantly refuses to discontinue this drug. Even my pulmonologist has slyly suggested the cardiologist may be receiving some hefty incentives for prescribing Eliquis! That thought crossed my mind long ago.

Something just isn't right here.

I was on Eliquis and also had the severe sweating with a terrible odor. Then I started having seizures. I went off the medicine slowly and now feel great. The Doctor I was seeing didn't believe me and Bayer wouldn't do an extended search into their clinical trials without Doctor requesting. Bayer's website said they believe in transparency in all their clinical trials. Oh really!!!!

Re: Lulu (# 5) Expand Referenced Message

You could talk to the Pharmacist. They are quite knowledgeable about all the side effects of prescriptions.

I was on Eliquois and experienced extreme sweating with the same odor you have written about. I then experienced seizures on 2 separate days. The Doctor I was seeing at the time did not believe me. I weaned myself from the medicine and have not experienced any of the symptoms since I stopped taking it. So...medicine is gone along with the Doctor.
