Procedure For Stopping Eliquis And Going Back To Aspirin (Page 3) (Top voted first)
UpdatedYes. I got off Eliquis because it was way too expensive. You are paying for a name. Eliquis was a product that helped people get off Coumidin. It accomplishes this. However, if you can not shell out $300 per month; a 325 MG Bayer aspirin will do the job. It thins your blood and helps prevent strokes. If you are still in Afib; I would defer you to your Cardiologist before switching. This is what I did and it works; plain and cheap.
Re: Marty (# 9)
Hi I am currently weaning myself off of this vile medication. Fingers crossed so far so good. I believe there is a more natural approach to most drugs, but pharmaceutical companies can't make money from those, it's all about the mighty dollar, not helping people.
Re: Tim Bower (# 112)
I had ablation done on 12/2017 for AFIB. Doctor put me on Xarelto in November. After ablation I began to feel exhausted and my legs became so weak I could hardly stand. I thought it was just after effects of ablation. Went for my 30 day checkup and after explaining my symptoms she switched me to Eliquis. After about two weeks the pain in my right leg became so severe I could not walk on it. Each day goes by I get weaker and feel I have to drag my right leg to walk. I am having dark urine and muscle spasms just about all over. There is not any hope of sleep as I am in so much discomfort I can't sleep. DO NOT USE EITHER of these drugs. The side effects are horrendous. Calling my doctor tomorrow to tell him I am getting off and if he disagrees I am still switching back to aspirin.
Re: John (# 104)
How many days did you quit taking eliquis before starting the aspirin?
Re: Yesi (# 6)
We understand how scary and sickening it is. From my understanding, the black box warning to not go off Eliquis is because its two related drugs have dangerous rebounds if you go off them. But I haven't found any actual research on Eliquis with this issue yet. So we can't risk going off, but we don't know for sure. They have us by the _ _ _ _ _!
Re: Bootsz (# 3)
Be careful using aspirin in lieu of Eliquis. Aspirin just thins your blood, aspirin DOES NOT prevent formation of blood clots. Check with your doctor
1. Discuss with your cardiologist and obtain his/her permission 2. Explain to him/her why you want to discontinue use. 3. Ask if you are a candidate for going off "cold turkey" or must you go off gradually.
I quit cold turkey with no side effects and take one 325 MG BAYER Aspirin each morning before breakfast. Been off for 4 years and doing fine.
Please remember each case is different and should be treated as such. Good luck.
Eliquis made me very ill and I gained 50 pounds the first year. I told mt cardiologist I wanted off of it and he said OK just replace it with a standard aspirin. I lost over 30 pounds within the next 2 weeks. That was nearly 2 years ago and I feel much better at just a week shy of 87 years of age.
Hi Paul. I have been off the Eliquis since March and I have had no problems at all. In fact, I feel like all the issues I was experiencing while taking Eliquis have disappeared. It's hard to know how much is simply the recovery process after the ablation. I suspect Eliquis was contributing to my problems. Stopping Eliquis was simple. I only went on the one a day aspirin for a few weeks. For the past few months I am not taking anything and feel fine.
Having said all that, each case is unique and has to be considered that way. I wish you well.
I have been on Eliquis since June of 2016 for Afib which I have had a problem with for over 30 years off and on. I don't like the side effects I've been having with the Eliquis and would LOVE to stop taking it. I also have additional problems with a hiatal hernia (my stomach is in my chest) causing major acid reflux at night, so I'm no on Protonix and Reglan. then there is the problem I have with multiple sclerosis which has caused major fatigue, numbness and balance problems as well as arthritis pain and stiffness. I feel all of theses problems have been compounded by the Eqliquis, but all the doctors say is "you don't want to have a stroke." No, but this is not living! I might be going for an ablation myself and hopefully that will be a step in the right direction for going off of Eliquis.
I am so glad to hear of your success with the ablation. I nixed both Eliquis (gave me headache and dizzy the entire first day I took it), and won't even try Xarelto. Neither of these drugs seem to have ANY kind of an antidote if problems; which is a shortfall of the prescrip med community. My nurse told me I was a "long way off" for having an ablation; but if it's the best course of action it is what I will ask for. Did your insurance company cover the procedure? I am on warfarin now; don't like it but at least it has Vitamin K antidote.
Sorry if I gave you the impression I had already had an ablation. I'm going to be seeing my heart doctor 7/6 and discuss going off eliquis and possible ablation. I will decide then what is the best course of action for me.
I'm scheduled for an ablation on 7/17/7...(hope 7 is a lucky number for me!). Doctor said he will check in me after one month and again after three months. At the three month mark, it's possible for me to get off of the Xarelto for good. Was previously on Rluquis and asked to switch to something else.
Would like to be off of blood thinners for good! Have lost 48 pounds in six months and am exercising daily to ultimayely escape the meds.
Just had ablation five days ago and back in NSR for the time being.fingers crossed that this lasts for the three month blanking period and I can eventually say goodbye to blood thinners forever.
Eliqis is a blood thinner that has no antidote. That means you must bridge it with Coumadin (Warfarin),Heperin, or Lovanox to safety get off. After a couple of weeks on the bridge meds. You can simply stop it without deadly effects. You must talk to your doctor to create a safe plan.
I have been on Eliquis 2.5 twice per day for 6 1/2 months for Afib. I think I have experienced just about every side effect on and off label.... hair loss that has somewhat slowed down, mild headache especially upon waking in the morning, daily loose bowel movements, dizzyness, fuzzy head feeling, increased arthritis like discomfort in my hands, muscle soreness in upper arms. However, my cardiologist's response is usually "Are any of these things worse than a stroke?" Good point! But as time goes by, I'm considering going off as a trial and going back to baby aspirin to see if the above problems go away.
Find a new doctor and do research on the Eliqis website, Mayo Clinic site or other reputable sources. Try a heart hospital or your insurance provider for a second opinion doctor.
I would be interested. I'm having extreme fatigue, ringing in the ears, brain fogginess.
Margaret: I am 64 years old and had a blood clot form in my jugular vein 5 months ago with no known origin. This is the first time I have had this and I don't have atrial fib or other heart problems. Because I inherited Factor V Leiden mutation from both parents my doctor insists I take Eliquis for the rest of my life. It has been a nightmare. I sleep all day, seldom get out of bed, have brain fog, cannot attend family outings, have skin rash, hand swelling and numbness. My doctor refuses to switch me to Warfarin, says it is not as good as Eliquis. I am very frustrated!
James. I wish. Someone would tell how to get off of eliquis I been on it 2 yrs I would rather be on aspirin
