I have prediabetes and was prescribed metformin 500 1x a day. Got along for almost a year now having all kinds of gastric problems, pain nausea etc. also have vomiting and diarrhea once every 2 to 3 months. Now trying 1/2 a pill. Would extended release help and is the vomiting occasionally related?

Metformin can cause gastric side effects, it's fairly common for it to do so. Other side effects may include dizziness, flatulence, stomach pain and hypoglycemia.
As to the occasional vomiting and diarrhea, if they are occurring that infrequently, they most likely aren't related to the medication.
Are you on any other medications? Have you changed your dietary intake, at all? There are many things that could potentially cause such symptoms.
How are you doing with the half tablet?
An extended release might help, but there's no way to say for sure.
