Prescription Help Antabuse

I new help finding a provider to prescribe Antabuse. I,be never had a prescription. I've had a lot of trouble with alcohol in the past. Presently seperated from my husband and moved home. One of the conditions of living at home is to take ant abuse daily. Help Snellville,GA

I'm sorry to hear about your situation. Based on my research, Disulfiram, the active in ingredient in Antabuse, is a very potent one and can remain in the body for weeks even after it is taken. The reaction it causes can be very critical... even lethal if the user engages in a substantial binge or there is not a hospital nearby. Further, Antabuse by itself has been shown to have almost no effect on alcoholism overall; without additional treatment alcoholics often revert to their original behaviour when the drug wears off.

For all the reasons I just mentioned, doctors very rarely prescribe Antabuse even for severe drinkers unless it is part of a larger recovery program and the patient is very well advised of the possible effects. For moderate or light drinkers, I think most doctors would steer patients to some other course of treatment. Antabuse is usually viewed only as a last and desperate resort.

If you are still interested in the medication, I think your best bet would be to call an alcohol treatment center and ask them if they can refer you to a doctor who prescribes it.
