Prescription Changed

Has this happened to anyone else. I live in Florida, I take Vicodin 10/325. My Rhumatologist prescribes it as follows: take 1 tablet by mouth every 4 to 6 hours or 2 every six hours as needed. Max use for 30 days supply. It was filled on Aug. 30, 2013. I took my new prescription to the pharmacy on Sept. 25 knowing most likely I would have to wait a couple more days to fill. Instead I'm told their were new forms the dea was requiring be completed for high frequency customers. Another pharmacist told me it had to do with the amout of Tylenol in the pill, and was given another answer from someone else. So, long story short, I could not fill my script for 240 10/325 vicodin for 10 more days. 240 for 30 days is too many. When I finally goty script it was noted max use for 45 day supply. My doctor was not consulted, and insists she is doing nothing wrong. I want to add that I have used this pharmacy for at least 10 years. I fill ALL my scripts there and I take several oral meds and 1 injection. I have Lupus (SLE & discoid). The pharmacy Winn Dixie. Any thoughts?

Hello, Kidmomma! How are you? sorry about the problem that you're having and the confusion.

Except in cases where someone has intractable pain due to something such as cancer, like people in stage 4 who aren't expected to survive, prescriptions for these types of medications can now only be written for the maximum recommended dosage.

That would be one tablet, every 4 hours, or 6 a day, so only 180 per month, thus yes, the 240 would be considered a 45 day supply. New regulations for this were put into place this past spring. It's actually surprising that your pharmacy filled it for the full 240, most of them have been refusing to fill them and doctors have to write new prescriptions for the correct amount.

This is a narcotic analgesic, so it has the potential to be habit forming and may cause side effects, such as nausea, dizziness, drowsiness, dry mouth and constipation.
