Prednisone Side Effects Last? (Top voted first)
UpdatedHi, I am 25 and I have been on prednisone since I was 15 for an adrenal deficiency I have. I was taking a 5mg dose daily for 10 years and typically I should be on them for life but I have recently decided that the side effects outweigh the benefits and have come off them about 9 weeks ago. The first week I did experience a horrible fever for a couple of days and could barely move. Now my symptoms (which I believe are due to the Prednisone withdrawals) consist of itchy rashes on my hands and feet, and also aches a pains everywhere! I wake up and everything seems to hurt from my feet to my neck. Are these symptoms due to coming off of the Prednisone and if so how long will the side effects take to subside? Thanks :)

Hello, Monica! How are you?
Did you come off of it abruptly, without a taper?
If so, that could be what's causing your problems and you may have actually worsened your adrenal insufficiency, as reported by the NIH. You should have these symptoms checked out by your doctor to be sure.
Has there been any change?
Hi, thanks very much for the reply.
The specialist I saw did some blood tests to see whether I was producing any cortisol whatever as I had been on the prednisone for so long my body might of stopped producing it because it had relied on the steroids for so long.
She did the blood tests and gave me an appointment for 8 months later with no way of obtaining my blood tests, so you could say I got fed up of waiting and took matters into my own hands.
For about 3 weeks I took one prednisone every other day to try wean myself off. And after the 3 weeks I stopped all together. Are the symptoms I'm experience typical those of coming of the steroids after so long? Also do you know how long on average things should go back to normal with the symptoms I I have had over the years due to the use of steroids?
