Prednisone. Once Taken Do You Need For Life?

I have been on/off Prednisone since 2003. Always been a taper of not more than 10 days. Usually starting with 60 mg. I'm careful to avoid caffeine and watch my sodium intake to avoid rapid heart beating and water retention. What bothers me is I seem to need it every two months like clock work, however usually clear during summer months Could my body be craving it so I always have to come back to it. I suffer from asthma/allergies/sinus and do not like taking it. It has really stepped up my osteoarthritis. It's like I can't fight a cold any longer by myself????

Hello, Lynnea! How are you? I'm sorry about the problems you're experiencing.

Your allergies, asthma and sinus issues are most likely what's causing you to need it regularly, as evidenced by the fact there is a time of year where you don't need it. My mother-in-law also requires a burst of it frequently, due to her severe asthma, usually every 6 to 8 weeks for her, as well.

The FDA lists its typical side effects as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache, acne and insomnia.

Do you take any other medications regularly? Some asthma and allergy medications can cause you to experience more frequent sinus infections and breathing issues, though they are supposed to help with them.
