Prednisone, Cheratussin And Xanax

I'm congested and taking Prednisone + Cheratussin, but can't sleep. Can I take my Xanax?

Hi Reba,

According to the University of Maryland Medical Center (umm.edu / drug interaction tool), there are interactions listed between Xanax and Cheratussin AC (I don't know if there are different types of Cheratussin). However, if you do have the one containing codeine, they go on to note that taking a benzodiazepine with an opioid can cause problems with your breathing as well as other related side effects.

If you are already prescribed both medications your doctor may suggest changing the timing and/or frequency of dosing in order to lessen the risk of such symptoms.
