Pradaxa And Surgery

What have people done who need surgery (probably open surgery for gall bladder) and taking Pradaxa. I have fears about having a stroke if I stop taking it and I know that I will have to take it. Thoughts please?

In most cases, they have you stop it for a few days, before surgery, then resume taking it, once any risk of bleeding has passed, but you should follow your doctor's instructions on what to do, according to the NIH.

Gall bladder surgery is rarely fully open, now, it usually just requires a small incision to insert a microscopic instrument. The amount of bleeding and healing time is usually very minimal.

Have you been provided any pre-op instructions, yet?

No, don't know for sure if I will need it (feeling better). I have a large wide-month hernia in my abdomen (thanks to a large hysterectomy scar that did not heal properly) so not sure if GB surgery could be done laproscopically . I hope so but not counting on it. I'm more worried about being off the Pradaxa for the days before surgery. Have you had surgery since you started on Pradaxa?
