Positive Drug Test Results For Amphetamines!

I went to my subutex dr today and was refused my medicine because my drug screen came back positive for amphetamines. I was shocked! Ive taken percocets over the years as my drug of choice. I've never touched diet pills or speed, etc. I am 5 months pregnant and afraid i will withdrawal. I am on wellbutrin and robitussin among other things. I was taking 32 mgs of subutex a day. I researched and found that wellbutrin and robitussin as well as vicks nasal spray can ALL cause false positives for amphetamines. I called my Dr and told them what i found and my situation. They say it will be 3 days before they know exactly what amphetamine it was. What should I do?

I think you did the right thing by researching which drugs can cause a false positive. I was also researching ways in which you may be able to dispute a false positive and I came up on the following information:

"Specific testing, such as that done by a gas chromatograph mass spectrometer, has the ability to distinguish the exact substance in question. This type of testing is not initially performed because of cost, but, is often a follow-up option for those facing serious consequences such as a job loss or jail time."

If you're able to I would also ask your doctor if additional testing may be done on the original sample so that a second sample may be taken. Unfortunately, on the cheaper, less reliable tests, it seems anything is possible. False positives are known to occur on them anywhere from 4 to 50% of the time. I really think they should stop worrying about costs and only use the gas chromatograph mass spectrometer, as these test results significantly impact peoples lives.

It's actually the Wellbutrin that you mentioned that has been known to cause a false positive for Amphetamines, on the less expensive, non-certified drug tests.

As to what you can do, there really isn't a lot you can do, other than request a retest, if they'll agree to do one.

They have sent off for the results from the same sample using the gc ms. They told me would be 3 days before I know which substance caused the positive. For now I will withdraw and hope the baby is ok. Thank You!

I was wondering the outcome of this. As it mirrors my husband right now., tested. + for meth. He was on all kinds of s*** here and there prior to testing..,he had imitrex nasal spray for our migraines, he had Sudafed, NyQuil, Vicks and another nasal spray (I forget the name) he requested and paid 175.00 for retest, just got news also positive. He has been with the company 7 years and is really pretty straight laced.. His boss paid fir the retest because we dont have it. His boss nor my husband certainly would not have paid 175.00 to retest he would own if fir sure.. Well here is where we stand. He is being asked to sign up for the classes (cost of each and number of classes unknown at this time) once that is provided, he can return to work, be subjected to Randoms for 2 years.. Which he could give a s*** about except that he is going to be pisssed he even has too. He is going in to get his stuff and resign because my southern man has pride and integrity and understandably refuses to sign up for a class that can be viewed as acknowledging or guilty. Will not do it..

Can he request a separate test now that he is well?

Would they permit such?

Any real suggestions? Our life has a major black cloud over it right, he leaved no insurance and just dx with heart condition need him healthy but not for the job for his family..

Demand another drug screen from another place like your local hospital, and your doctor can't refuse the results..... but don't wait too long.

Because I have these pills just laying around & school is demanding, here is my short story. I need to get rid of them...
So I took a 30 mg adderal for evening class. I am not even thinking about getting asked to take a random drug test on Friday. And let me say I am not frequent user, I'd say 1 every 3 months. & it just so happens I get asked.
So It comes up positive at 9:30am. The first test was a 7 dip panel test. So they ask me to go take another test, but this one is gonna be sent out.
So in between this little time & almost 2 hrs shy of the 24 mark from when I took the stupid pill. I went pee several, several times, went to the bathroom, & even drank almost a whole gallon of OJ & more water & pee'd some more. By the time I took the 2nd pee test around 3:30 pm Friday. My pee was almost completely see thru but still had some off color in it to be accepted. Crossed my fingers, and waited for the results to come in.... It came back positive : (

I agree , I tested positive for amphetamines and methamphetamines on a drug test at work and take only what the doctor prescribes to me . It's ridiculous!
