Percocet 5-325 Vs Ibuprofen 600mg

So I was diagnosed with Shingles last week and was initially prescribed Vicodin for the pain by Urgent Care. In 6 days blew through the 20 Vicodin due to the pain being unreal. I called my PCP and they upgraded the prescription to Percocet 5-325 because the Vicodin was simply not working. The Urgent Care doctor called me and said no don't take the Percocet, take 600mg of Ibuprofen instead and if that doesn't show relief then they said to try Gabapentin. Between the Valtrex and Vicodin I've had extremely minimal side effects, mainly just drowsiness fortunately. I'm confused as to how 600mg of Ibuprofen is supposed to do what Vicodin couldn't do over 56 days 5-6 times a day? I looked at the side effects for Gabapentin and the side effects, at least some are rather terrifying. I know it doesn't necessarily mean I would experience any of them but even the chance of doing is a bit frightening. Just curious what some thoughts are about this. Thanks.

The reason for the Ibuprofen was most likely due to the way it helps with inflammation, as well as pain, and Gabapentin is a medication frequently given for conditions like Shingles, that cause nerve pain

The FDA lists the typical side effects of Gabapentin as possibly including nausea, dizziness, dry mouth, mood changes, and weight changes.

As to scary side effects, every medication you mentioned carries the risk of causing some of them, so the Gabapentin should really only be on the same level of worry as all the others.

What particular ones did you find most distressing? Perhaps those can be addressed to help you feel better about trying it.
