Painful Injection

I was on Enbrel ten years ago with pleasant results. Then Humana Insurance stopped paying for it and I went on Methretrexate for several years. As I aged it seemed my rheumatoid arthritis got worse so doctor put me on Remicade which I had to obtain financial assistance for. Five years of wonderful help on disease, my funding ended and doctor put me back on Enbrel with new insurance company. Enbrel had a program that helped me financially and I received my first shipment last Friday. Followed directions for new version of giving a needle. I had no trouble with old system of physically injecting needle myself. This tubular, self contained needle and medicine required concentrated action on my part and I did all the directions said. When it came to pressing the purple tab on top, my arthritic finger wouldn't bend that way so daughter did the pleasure. The pain was excruciating and so unexpected and I didn't dare move for the fifteen required seconds. WHAT HAPPENED???? It felt like I must have embedded the needle into a muscle. Is there anyone there who experienced the same results and what did you do? In a couple more days I have to inject another needle and am not looking forward to it at all. When I gave myself needles for Methatrexate and even Enbrel before, I was able to give them with none or very slight pain.

Hello, Ritajean! How are you? I'm sorry about the experience you had.

Are you referring to the SureClick?

If so, there is no special way your finger has to bend to inject it and you can use any finger that works and is easy for you.

To put it simply, it's clean the area, stretch the skin, place the injector, press the button and hold for 15 seconds. The window should turn yellow, once all the medicine is injected.

Did you allow it to warm to room temperature, for at least 30 minutes, before injecting it? The instructions do warn that it may be uncomfortable or painful, if it isn't at room temperature, before injecting.

I'm not trying to belittle your experience, or anything, I'm just trying to help get at the root of what went wrong.

Many injections are given in the muscle and do not cause such severe pain.

Other issues that may affect it include dropping the injector on a hard surface, injecting into an area where the skin is not held tight, or trying to replace the cap or not pulling it straight off, which could cause the needle to bend.

Alternatively, if the autoinjector doesn't work for you, the old standard injections are still available and you could ask your doctor to prescribe that, instead.

Did your doctor provide injection training?

The FDA lists the typical side effects as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache, joint/muscle aches and administration site reactions.

Thank you for your answer. First, yes it is the Sureclick inj. Since my request was submitted a nurse, sent from Enbrel, came to my house and showed me the proper way to do the inj. Everything she showed me was what I had done. She had me do a test inj. on a round rubberized object and I passed. She was there to witness me inj'ing myself (since they are not permitted to do the actual inj's). Before I did the inj., I informed her that I read in the brochure about no infections and I showed her a wound that I have had for over two weeks and it had a scab but was inflamed. She told me not to use the Enbrel and to see my doctor for approval. He told me to wait until inflammation has gone and a good scab is secure. Since I had to wait several more days I continued watching videos and came upon one that showed the Enbrel package and when she opened it up there was regular needles, filled with chemical. Now that I know they are available I will surely order them in my next batch. Regretfully, I still have three of the Sureclick needles to use when I get back on them. I am going to try my belly, since I have a lot of that to work on, even leaving 2" around the navel to avoid. Thank you again for your concern.
