Pain Meds Help

Is it safe to take 2 10mg hydrocodones every 3 hours? I am 24 and I am scheduled to have a total hip replacement on the 18th. For the past two days I have been taking 2 hydrocodones, 1 gabapentin, and 1 robaxin every 3-4 hours to keep my pain under control so I don't end up in the er like I did on Wednesday. So my question is, is it safe to be taking all of these every 3-4 hours?

Hello, Kat! How are you doing? I am very sorry that you're in so much pain.

If you're taking Norco/Vicodin that also has Acetaminophen in it, then it is dangerous to take that many in a 24 hour period. You can't exceed 3,000mgs of Acetaminophen per day. Taking more than that risks an overdose, which could be fatal.

It is really best to not take more than prescribed. You may want to contact your doctor/surgeon and ask abut taking something else, in the meantime, that doesn't contain Acetaminophen.

FDA recommends that you not exceed 1,000 mg Acetaminophen (Tylenol) every 6 hours or more than 4,000 mg in 24 hour period. Hydrocodone and Acetaminophen (Tylenol) has 325 mg of (Acetaminophen) Tylenol in them that would be 1,300 mg in a 3 hours period which exceeds the recommended dosage for every 6 hours. In a 24 hours period that would be 5,200 mg Acetaminophen (Tylenol), which well exceds the recommended dosage for a 24 hour period.

If you have been exceeding the recommended dosage you need to contact your dr. The liver damage done from too much Acetaminophen (Tylenol) does not come up right away.

My complete back was redone with pins, plates, screws, and rods. C5-6 and thoracic completed. The dr said no more surgery at all or any needles for cortisone, etc. What pain meds can I take?
