Pain Manag. During And After Pregnancy
UpdatedI started having chronic pain two year ago when I had my daughter. At first I thought it was just typical after birth pains but after two months of being on 10mg percocets every 6 hours I knew that something must be wrong. Turns out I have endometriosis and interstitial cystitis. Drs are also suspecting at the moment that I have a bone density problem or maybe RA. I've gone back and forth between all my drs because one either diagnosis me but can't help me with the pain or they don't know what's wrong with me all together. I finally got a referral for pain Managment and the dr refuses to give me any kind of narcotic. Now I understand that they are cutting back on what they give patients because of the high level of abuse but when you have a 26 year old who can't cook, clean and play with her kids because she feels crippled, how do you basically tell her too bad? Now my biggest problem has become addiction. My husband was hurt during a deployment in Iraq and he is prescribed to pain meds so we usually share them but then when we run out we have friends who give us some if needed. I'm now 19 weeks pregnant and the pain has not gone away like It is supposed to with endometriosis but only gotten worse. My uterus is weak. My dr gave me an rx for lortabs and told me to use sparingly which I am but now I am feeling an overwhelming feeling of guilt subjecting my daughter to this crap. And my biggest concern is withdrawals. I can't function while I'm going through withdrawals how am I going to function with a newborn?
How do I get off these for good and still manage my pain???

I understand you are in pain, but you MUST consult someone regarding getting off these for your pregnancy, at least (absolutely, IF YOU JUST CAN'T MANAGE THE PAIN, until the 6th month (double-check for sure) while brain development occurs, I know the first 3 mos. are critical too, I may have flipped that and it's the lung development that's later. Listen, the entire tine us critical but I speak not from a place of judgement but experience so pls hear me out. I too had SEVERE pain w/my third pregnancy, age 29 from Crohn's Disease (had already had 3 small bowel resections, was crippled by the arthritis that affects some Crohn's patients & the pregnancy was unplanned. I had taken Vicodin during the 3rd-6th week & freaked out as I was told I couldn't get pregnant. Doctor told me he sees addicts deliver healthy babies, if I could decrease amount, to try. Well I would only take a pain pill if I was so far gone and & by my 5th month I was in so much worse pain, I had to be hospitalized due to dehydration, hadn't gained but 9lbs., the pain sent up my blood pressure & I was rushed to hospital via ambulance. I didn't talk to my doctor, I LIED, I told him I was taking the drugs & was doing fine & scheduled appts. around my flares. They had to give me IV pain meds and IV nutrition for 2 weeks my baby was not active in utero as my others had been, but he checked me & reassured me this was fine and the important development was taking place (he's really good, but we both know it's best to take nothing but your vitamins). My baby was just 5.5 lbs vs. my other 2 at over 8 lbs., I thought he was "chatty", instead he was cold & had to be warmed - BROKE MY HEART. He grew to be a gorgeous active boy, but then he had pretty bad ADHD, Autism (not severe but VERY VERY difficult life for us all). Every specialist tells me this was NOT the result of these medications, and I honestly don't know but I think about it every single day. Did I cause this? Would they tell me if I had, knowing I'm so ill now? You can not nurse and start back on your pain meds after delivery, I had to and it allowed me to be an active & involved Mom, I also went into a partial remission but I just tell you mom to Mom, talk to your doctor openly, heck talk to several and find out the best way to look out for the both of you. I wish I had, I'll never know if my not taking them, or taking them caused his difficult road (happy to report he's in college now, but he has a hard time socially and struggles to "fit in". Maybe it was just random, if I knew for certain, it would ease my pain a bit, but raising a special needs child takes so much more work than raising my others. I was and am blessed to have excellent support and his siblings just adore him, so much to be thankful for. The fact that both you & your husband are taking these, and forgive me, but the way you get the sets you up for problems b/c no doctor is monitoring you or the baby for complications related to these drugs. Are you positive neither of you is getting addicted? Just think about it, you don't have to tell me, but try to be honest with yourself, it's still very early (but critical developmental stage too), in fact the more I think about it, the early parts are where they do the most developing b/c at 28 weeks they could live if premature (still too early of course), but just saying that now the brain is developing, so much to risk. I hope you get help and will pray for you both.
