Pain Medication Starts With L

Updated

My doctor wanted to change my methadone to a new pain med that starts like L. I believe he said Luna? I take the methadone for RSD and I am not getting the relief that I use to get. I am frightened to start a new medication because I do not want to take something where you build up a tolerance. Presently I take 80mg. of metadone per day in four does of 20mg. It does not show up in my urine or blood so the doctor feels taking a different medication would be what he wants to do. But I need more information before I go that route, does anyone know anything about this new drug?

Well, first of all, it is always possible to build up a tolerance to anything you take regularly and require a switch to a different medication or a dosage adjustment. This is perfectly normal and the time frame can vary depending on your body.

Was the medication he mentioned called Lyrica?

If so, it contains the active ingredient Pregabalin, which is an anticonvulsant that has also been proven effective at helping with certain types of nerve pain.

Its side effects may include: nausea, dizziness, weight changes and dry mouth.

It is not a new medication, though, it has been around for quite a few years and is available as both the name brand and generic.

My main concern is that if you have been taking Methadone, that isn't a medication that you can just stop abruptly. It is well known to cause serious and dangerous withdrawal symptoms, even if someone isn't abusing it.

Thank you for your reply as well as your imput. It is not Lyrica, that I am sure of. I have tried this in the past and it was ineffective and did cause side effects. I was quite reluctant to even start the methadone, however I like the fact that it is not a drug I would abuse. It did help me to function for at least a year, but the RSD had progressed some so my pain is unrelenting. Because ther is no cure for RSD, I will have to take medicine for pain all of my life, therefore I always research evrything first. Unfortunately, without pain control, it is impossible for me to bear any weight on my effected foot. I suppose I will until I see the doctor at the end of the month and ask him more about this new drug. Once again, I thank you.
