Pain Management Doctors In And Around The Baton Rouge Area That Prescribe Meds To People Who Really Need Them & Accepts Medicaid (Page 2) (Top voted first)

Updated

Does anyone know of a doctor in and around the Baton Rouge Louisiana area that will prescribe pain meds that takes Medicaid? I'm seeing a doctor now in Maryland but I really need to move back to Louisiana very sad that your pain keeps you from moving. I have a sister that is terminally ill and sad to say dying...and meds are keeping me from going to take care of her in her final days. Please help

There are several reasons why pain management drs won't accept Medicaid.for the treatment of.chronic pain. One reason is because Medicaid here pays so little for office visits. Another reason is because Washington DC politicians, lead by Republican Senator Charles Grassley has sent letters to the majority of state Medicaid programs demanding to know what disciplinary actions have been taken against high prescribers of pain meds and certain other meds. And I'm sure that the stats that show Medicaid patients are more likely to abuse and divert pain meds than other patients factor in.

Louisiana Medicaid not paying for pain management of chronic pain is not new, it never has, and that won't be changing in the future, unfortunately. PCP's won't start doing again because they don't want their waiting rooms filling up with Medicaid patients that are only there for their monthly prescriptions. Several Medicaid providers have told me this and it makes sense. And there are a lot of things that drs chose to do when they treat chronic pain patients that Louisiana Medicaid won't pay for like drug screens, pain contracts, etc

There are Essential Benefits that each state Medicaid program must provide and Louisiana Medicaid does that. But there are a large number of services that Louisiana Medicaid doesn't pay for, pain management is only one of them.

Alexis B I'm happy to hear you have submitted what is required. It shouldn't take too long, for them to go over your medical reports and then schedule you an appointment. Best of luck. You will really like this Dr. I've been seeing him, for almost 4 years. He is great! If a couple weeks go by, since you turned in your paperwork and you haven't heard anything, from his office I'd give them a follow up courtesy call. Also this Dr. schedules his appts. properly. No long waits, as it should be. No one in chronic pain wants to sit for hours, in an office waiting to be seen. Another specialist actually treats me, for my Multiple Sclerosis, [I'm on IV Infusions] but I bring all my other treatment plans to my pain dr. for his records. It helps him keep things in perspective, so that he may do his part, of the treatment plan, which is pain mgmt., properly.

Allison, Louisiana Medicaid Will Not Pay For A Pain Management Doctor. If your doctors wont prescribe pain meds and you can't pay cash, there isn't anything else you can do.

Donoharmwhatajoke, financial need is only considered with SSI. A certain number of work credits are required for SSDI. The claimant must prove with medical and non medical evidence they are not able to perform SGA, which in 2016 is $1,1300 a month before taxes. A diagnosis is required, but it takes much more to be approved. Working has to be more than difficult and not being able to find a job is not enough. A doctor saying a patient cannot work is not enough because doctors do not know SSA Disability Criteria.

Hillsborough, there is nothing wrong with a doctor recommending a patient move to where medical marijuana is legal. By the way, medical marijuana was legalized in Louisiana recently for the treatment of "patients clinically diagnosed as suffering from glaucoma, symptoms resulting from the administration of chemotherapy cancer treatment or spastic quadriplegia;" It will have to be obtained by prescription from designated pharmacies. Private insurance, Medicare nor Medicaid will pay for Medical Marijuana.

@J J,

I may not have a doctor I can refer you to, but I can provide you with a couple links that may be of service to you in so far as locating pain management doctors within your general area or which ever area you plan on moving to.

Just input your city or zip code for narrowed results:
{link removed because site no longer exists}

wellness.com/find/pain%20management%20specialist

I'd consider calling up a number of them to see if they are accepting new patients. To get a real vibe for the doctor you may even want to follow up with a visit in person.

I hope this info helps and wish you good luck on finding the right doctor!

There are 5 Plans through Bayou Health, with 3 of them you must see a provider in their plan,(Amerigroup Real Solutions, LaCare, Louisiana Health Connections ) with the other 2 they only need to accept medicaid (United Health Care Community Plan, Community Health Solutions)

If all you have is Medicaid, you Must use Bayou Health. look at their website..bayouhealth at the end put com. There is a difference in Medicare and Medicaid and also a difference in Medicare that is supplemented by Medicaid (dual eligible)

If you're referring to opioid pain meds for chronic pain that is not cancer, there are certain state laws physicians have to go by. And Medicaid does not pay these providers enough to do all of the paper work and extra time needed to do functioning test every 3 months.

Also Senator Charles Grassley, sent letters to Louisiana as well as 33 other states wanting to know what investigations were being done in regards to medicaid patients that were being prescribed high numbers of opioids and antipsychotics meds by providers. So now providers that write high numbers of therse rxs are closely monitored and they know it. Center for Medicaid and Medicare has sent out several letters warning about Diversion in both these programs. In the October 2012 Provider UpDate for Medicaid Providers in Louisiana, stated that treating chronic pain that is not cancer should not be treated with opioids due to addiction and diversion. Provider Manual for Louisiana Medicaid states that Medicaid Will Not Cover Pain Management for chronic pain patients.

Since bob is on Medicaid in Louisiana and has no problems getting pain meds, maybe he could give you the name of his dr. But, I would recommend not only looking at the list of providers but also calling them to be sure they accept only medicaid.

For pain management docs, there quite a few. There listed in book. The last one I saw was Dr. Barritt Johnson. Ask or look up Pain Management Intervention. Be sure u use Intervention cause there's a Clinic, also. That's not him. However, it's gotten very hot out here & docs are real strict. I had been taking Roxi 30s & MS Contin 30 mg. for 10 yrs. I was reduced to same dose MS but dropped to Roxi 10 (which is Percocet 10 without acetaminophen). All clinics are doing that now... cause all docs are getting busted for prescribing too strong meds. Only pain mgnment can write for those meds. If u can handle just Roxi, a wonderful doc is Dr. James Graves at B.R. Clinic. He is not a "croaker" (script writer). I saw him once...told him my injuries and he prescribed Roxi 10 mg. That is legally the strongest he can prescribe. He is just GP not pain management. I chose this drop to get rid of pain mgment docs. All they did for me was get me hooked & leave me NOT high & dry when they got busted. Be careful with ur meds. Pretty soon thats's all you'll have... meds & waiting for meds! I've been picking up my meds for 6 mos. & have never seen him since. No drug panels so far but best thing no BS visits every 2 or 3 mos. u have to pay for! And u and doc know they're BS. Good luck. Shouldn't be hard to find one...but if u r an abuser or dealer will be hard to stay under care.

But then why does my health plan which is UnitedHealth care community plan list under specialty Pain Management? which started Feb.2015, if Medicaid won't pay for it. They told me by phone they will pay its just that maybe since it started just last month doctors have not started taking it. And of course finding someone who will accept it. One doctor said that they would accept medicaid but only as a secondary plan and that I'd need to purchase a plan to go with it.

I need just a doctor that will listen to me and if he or she can't fix my problem or issue medicate me until a solution is available. I'm 31 and I sh a way better quality of life. I've had chronic nerve damage in my shoulder and neck since I was 19 and also have none epileptic seizures and as a result of these starting out of nowhere I suffe chronic migraines. My doctor finally after two years of visits and me researching different medications put me on Tylenol 3 for both my back and head. With other meds. He retired almost 2 years ago and I can't find a doctor that isn't aft of standing behind the oath they take and treat people and heal them above anything else. I'm a RN and I get frustrated and will tell the doc on duty to change professions if they are to much of a coward to do their jobs God granted them the God given talent of having and fix the ailment or help manage it the best way possible. it's sad, I know more government official and police officers, lawyers, firemen, school teachers that sell drugs, make drugs, and take drugs illegally and nothing happens to them. It's not right and someone has to take a stand someone has to scream pain isn't pain let the medical professionals do their jobs without harassment and prosecution from the law. Let us individuals sign waivers relieving the doctors not responsible if we get hurt. im in denham springs Louisiana and I have Medicaid and ameri-health. Can anyone let me know which doctor to check out?

I called last week Bc my dr in New Orleans was arrested in that Big DEA bust "OperationPilluded " so I called Dr Kramm to see if he's taking new patients & they asked what insurance I had & I said none & they said they are not seeing patients wo health insurance. Soooo I had to call around & they have a few in New Orleans & 1 in lafayette called Ace pain management. Right now PM Drs are scared Bc the DEA is all over them & want to shut down all PM clinics! They think strong opioids should be for cancer patients only! Sad!

Suboxone can also be used to treat pain. Recently there was a documentary done on Military personnel returning from serving overseas, with injuries and severe pain, due to these injuries. Suboxone was first used to treat those that had become addicted, due to treatment, while injured. Suboxone was starting to be recognized and used, for treatment of pain. It's not the usual treatment and is commonly known, as being used for the treatment of drug addiction/dependency. Actually it does work for pain. I know. I've been in pm, for years and have tried suboxone myself, after seeing this documentary, to see if there is anything substantial to it being used for pain. It does help pain.

I meant Dr Jeffrey Adair.

If you take a Med that is used for the treatment of drug addiction, you may not be able to find another Dr that will treat your pain with opiates.

This Dr is strictly legit, so I'm just letting you know. You will need your Technicians reports for all you MRI's, any surgery records, but the MRIs are a MUST. Also a 1 yr pharmaceutical printout, for your current pain meds, also a MUST. Fax# 985-326-8107. Hope Medical Specialties Slidell, La. Phone #: 985-326-8101. I'd call their office first. I think it will be $300 your first visit. Maybe $325 including your u/a. He takes my Medicare benefits, but he does not accept Medicaid. I saw him for quite some time, before he started taking any benefits. He's a good Dr. and if he accepts you make sure to abide by the rules and you won't have any problems.

Hi Sunny and others on Medicaid. It is important to know that just because you are eligible for Medicaid it should NOT discriminate against you. It is a really sound idea to discuss this with your GP in a proactive manner "Dr. you know I have Medicaid and always appreciate your help. The problem is in our state NOW in particular someone like me just cannot get paid on a pain specialist. Are you willing until we get someone willing to treat my pain to help me at least for now on a month to month basis?"

That puts the power into the PCP or GP's hands for this situation and allows you to continue to be empowered. Louisiana will find as other states have when they have done similar reductions a year from now "this does not work" and along with the removal of this Odumma and Odummacare which may take a few years but will happen WE as Americans will get through this.

If for now a GP can help you and you respectfully remind him or her that PM's in the state are NOT paid for Medicaid you are also giving them LEGAL documentation to potentially treat you.

Some states such as Alabama allow GP's to treat chronic pain however, unless you get a special exception most states are finite about Medicaid allowing you to use the program in your home state.

Dear Medicaid recipients,

You can go to OIG (office of Inspector General) to complain of activity for non treatment of some (omission) and allowing others is considered fraud.

Do NOT feel you are stuck only with in state complaints. Let me tell you something from years of regulatory work when CMS (formerly HCFA) gets enough complaints and they are direct care then the state will high tail it because they will risk loss of complementary funding or their 50% "cent" from Uncle Sam and his big pockets of cash.
