Oxymorphone 20 Mg =? Of Oxycodone
(Newest replies first)
Updated
My physician recently prescribed 20mg of Oxymorphone 2X a day with 10mg Oxycodone for breakthrough pain up to 3 a day. My question is what is equivalent strength of the Oxymorphone to the Oxycodone? Dr. Made it seem like it's very strong, which initially was in first month but now 3 months later, not as much. I do have multiple pain issues, not just back pain. Still I find myself taking all 3 Oxycodone for quite a bit of breakthrough pain. Dr is acting as if I shouldn't need but 2 for in between. Any thoughts?

Old Gman,
Pretty f****; pathetic state of affairs that our government has put our doctors in such a position that their scared, frightened, paranoid about using pain meds in any particular way to help those pf us in debilitating pain. Although I feel sympathetic to those people who do misuse these options. I'm at the point where these a******s have been making those of us suffering from legitimate medical issues feel ostracized, especially when picking up our meds, legitimately prescribed, at the pharmacy. If not for my using the same pharmacy, and having a rapport with one of the pharmacists I wouldn't have been able to fill it. Same Primary Care for over two decades, if, not for him and my loving wife of 20+ hearts I know of only two roads that I would have gone down(we all know 2 roads I'm alluding to)
Hippocratic Oath, should be hipocritit oath. When our government gets to dictate to our health providers as to these drugs, that help you/me and others in chronic pain. I served my country honorably, and due to a severe accident while in service, I've been raked over the coals by totally incompetence from "professionals in medical field", specifically the VA (professionals my white Irish ass). Separate subject, sorry to rant. I served under one of the ideals that when we were out of service, especially being wounded during my service, that we would be taken care of.what a load of garbage that was & continues to be for my fellow wounded Service personnel. Although I,unfortunately, injured myself in a totally unrelated matter after my Honorable Discharge from the service getting medical care for my injuries, besides all of the surgeries I've had to endure, unsuccessfully, pain meds are all that takes "edge" off (pain mostly under control at old dosages) that pain is never gone, just manageable. Got to eat my hot dogs now. So I can keep my meds down.
Yep, i'm 68 and taking 20mg oxymorphone 2x day with two 10/325 mg oxycodone for breakthrough, 6 months now. Actually 3 oxycodone works best, but if that brings me up to 100 mg day, wow I am in big trouble. My pm just took me off oxymorphone saying they cannot prescribe any more. They put me on 15mg MsContin 2x day with two 10 oxycodone as backup. I am going through HELL after 10 days. I always feared this day. I never had serious WITHDRAWAL and turning 69 it feels it's killing me or will soon. Pm response - oh drink lots of liquids or add tylenol to the mix. They would not even see me when i showed back up. We dont take walm insurance... oh yes after 2 days my bp went to 190/100. My wife called an ambulance as i thought i was going to meet my maker. I decided to do deep breathing after being discouraged to go to the hospital by medics. WTHFK!! Got thru it. Oh just drink lots of fluids, give it time. They refuse to see me. I have been a good patient taking their trigger shots and massage therapy. I have ALL the old man back problems. Lifted heavy equipment for 50 years with a few fixable back problems. On Social Security, still working or trying to do management, cant lift s***! I am SCARED! Making my poor semi disabled wife (married 36 years) CRAZY. I feel like im dying most of the time and cant think. This is HELL on earth. Please HELP me. I am fighting for my life. By the way, my health is in good shape otherwise but has been going down hill fast. I feel the gov is trying to wipe a bunch of us out to save a ton of $$. It's 4 in morning and I'm in too much pain to sleep. Is this what i get?

That was 2000 and I have had nothin but problems since I get told I'm a junky just lookin to get the pills I used to carry around my medical records just so that wouldn't b said and I would turn down pain pills askin for tests or scans somethin to show whatite b causin the pain and get a shot in the er or office and go home tryin to prove my point been thru 3 different pain management drs that made things worse except this last one Dr hall in Jonesboro AR Cps clinic they have help till I been on the same dose meds for 3 yrs and its one of those I can't tell I talk it but if I don't I for sure kno it and the last visit he says instead of OK let's try somethin different or maybe up ur dose cuz its been so long how bout we just take them away all together! I can barely get out of bed most days and they want to take what tiny lil relief I mite b gettin away how nifty is that?
Was on 540mg oxycontin er total daily at one point a few years ago of my own volition(love using that word)weaned myself down to 180mg and had been helping keep pain at a tolerable level, doctor then had me discontinue use(which I did on my own)went off oxy for 2 weeks&was then put on 10mcg/hour buprenorphine patch, did not work nearly as well as the oxy after another short detox was again put back on the oxy but at a level 75% less (from the 180mg daily) down to 45mg total daily I was in a very serious motorcycle accident in August of 1996 have had many arthroscopic procedures and a total shoulder replacement 10 years ago.am still suffering BADLY NOW MORE THAN EVER before.all the abuse of oxy only has doctors more paranoid about overprescribing&this really sucks for those of us in real distress. Are there any advocacy groups out there for other people in my unfortunate position?? Even though I have been prescribed oxy for many years now I feel guilt about even using the word(Oxycontin) Did anyone out there know that any promotional items given to doctors are collectables worth some serious$$$$$..Go online&check,it'll blow your mind !!! PLEASE HELP ME,IM NOW STRUGGLING MORETHAN EVER FOR HELP IN CONTROLLING THIS PAIN!!! I can't be the only person suffering through all this political/bureaucratic b+××÷=%t !!!
Ive been on oxymorphone for a year now and all of a sudden got cut completely off for no reason. I have been on pain meds since 1992 for back and leg pain. I also jave 9 stents in my heart. Can anyone recommend a a doctor?
Where do you live? What state and city, Might can help
I know of a few good pain doctors in Nc. What you have to do is have a valid ID from NC and a referral from a primary care doctor that knows snd has copies of all your Mr is in last 3 to 5 years.Any pain doctor you been to before. In last year or two. Need all paperwork from them faxed to the NC including pharmacy record also fax to the Nc doctor. Then they review in 2 days and call you for appt. Everything has to co MN e from previous offices. Then if they see you are legit. They'll call and you will be in in 5 days .and they write what helps you the bedt.they know everyone is different and will prescribe you what you want as long as you prove your history of what pain doctor and prescribing list .
Pardon me, I meant Verwon said:
Oxymorphone is actually twice as strong as Oxycodone, so it's a 2 to 1 ratio. 20mgs of Oxymorphone equals 10mgs of Oxycodone.
I also see the corrected amount now, my apologies.
Anyone that can help a chronic pain person. I'm in vicinity of South Carolina and North Carolina. I drive 5 hours to Ga. But looking z place 39 min to 4 hours. I'm fully disabled with broke neck as ND my pain is just having me in tears.
And maybe they can put you on a sustained release narcotic such at OxyContin, MS Contin, or maybe adding a fentanyl patch for long term sustained release pain coverage.
I did have a typo there, my apologies.
Yes, it would be 20mgs to 40mgs.
Thank you Mary! I did receive clarification regarding the actual strength level. I realize Vernon transposed dosage information. The good news is I've been taking less Oxycodone for breakthrough and the Opana has been working well. When I realized the dosage I was taking I did get a bit worried. I don't want to increase the levels. Basically I'm trying to be patient and not reach immediately for another med at first sign of breakthrough. Difficult at times, doesn't always work but better than not trying at all.
A great deal of misinformation is posted regarding the equivalency of oxymorphone, or opana, and oxycodone. Oxymorphone is stronger. Thus 20mg of oxymorphone is the equivalent of 40mgs of oxycodone. There are charts all over the internet as well as in the prescribing information for opana(oxymorphone). Be careful.
Hello, Bel! How are you? I'm sorry that you're in pain.
Oxymorphone is actually twice as strong as Oxycodone, so it's a 2 to 1 ratio. 20mgs of Oxymorphone equals 10mgs of Oxycodone.
However, it is normal for your doctor to want you to use the least amount possible, that's what they are supposed to encourage to avoid over prescribing and abuse.
The FDA lists these medications as being narcotic analgesics, so they have the potential to be habit forming and may cause side effects, such as nausea, dizziness, drowsiness, dry mouth and constipation.
The best thing to do is just be honest with them about your pain levels. They can raise the Oxymorphone dosage, if needed.
Is there anything else I can help with?
