Oxycontin Withdrawal (Top voted first)
UpdatedI've been taking Oxycodone 30 mg for neuropathy several years. Recently I was hospitalized five weeks and put on OxyContin 40 mg plus Oxycodone 15 mg for breakthrough which worked like a charm. My problem being is that my 77 year old PCP won't prescribe a time-release and considers them dangerous. My question is this; how do I wean off this med using my leftover 30 and 15 mg Oxycodone until I can locate a new doctor who will prescribe the OxyContin? Plus I'll need to wean from my Oxycodone if I can't locate a doctor. I fear the withdrawal plus the horrible pain of Neuropathy returning full guns if I can't find a new doc. PLEASE someone PLEASE help me with this problem as I'm terribly frightened

Thanks so much for answering my post, John. Withdraw is scary thing to think about especially when I think of the seizures etc. I've never done anything like this before and I wasn't sure just how to do it. Concerning the OxyContin the time release concerns me and I have no idea how to taper from it. Withdrawal plus extreme pain setting is such a fear/concern for me.
Once again I want to thank you and I'll try Google to find out information on what you suggested.
I'm not sure why your doctor thinks that, the time released is actually much safer than the regular release and more abuse proof.
The FDA classifies this medication as a narcotic analgesic, so it has the potential to be habit forming and may cause side effects, such as nausea, dizziness, drowsiness, dry mouth and constipation.
The usual withdrawal effects may include nausea, dizziness, diarrhea, headache, rebound pain, depression, fever and chills. '
Have you tried consulting a specialist, such as doctor that specifically does pain management?
Thanks for your reply Verwon. I'm trying, as we speak, to try and locate a pain specialist but the great majority have a very low patient recommendation. Maybe these are individuals who were refused opioids. I'll soon find out.
I'm not sure why my current PCP regards time released as extremely dangerous but he's soon to become history as soon as I locate a replacement for him.
My wife took 9 oxycontin pills so far and it has helped with the pain but the side effects are far more than we want to deal with or can handle. Can we stop taking them without withdrawal effects or expecting the pain to come back?
As someone who's been on opioids(and other meds in conjunction) for chronic pain for 5+ years, I believe it would be best for you to just wean yourself off while still taking such a low dose. For the pain try using a non-opioid pain medication like lyrica, gabapentin, or maybe even cyclobenzaprine, baclofen , or medical cannabis. Honestly from the bottom of my heart the opioids aren't worth the Relief they give in the end especially at your current dose/tolerance. Please consider other options first before jumping right back to the oxy... think hard about it and not just about the short term...good luck
