Oxycontin Vs. Generic Oxycontin

Updated

Much to my surprise 2 days ago my pharmacy gave me generic OxyContin instead of Brand OxyContin. I have been on 40 mg. OxyContin 3x's daily and have been for 15 years. I don't think twice about them as there is a 2 hour window to take it and never any problems with them, only my Sister knows I have even have to take them (I'm 57 years old). These Generic Oxycontins are identical in color, size, markings, everything which is odd. The only information I can find on the content of the drug is that the generic is the same as the brand name Only in the inactive ingredients but the active ingredience are different. The reason I'm asking about them is I feel absolutely terrible, I'm having stomach pains, all my joints hurt, having very bad headaches and I rarely get headaches! I'm feeling heavy chested also. I've never have a problem in all the years of taking these meds and suddenly my insurance company wants to save some money, geez. I'm just wanting to know if I am suffering withdrawals or if I have a terrible flu or if anyone knows these active ingredience differences? Thank You for any replies. Guessing I will call my Doctor tomorrow.

Hello, Steve! How are you?

No, that is not how it works. The active ingredients are the same between name brands and generics, it's the inactive ingredients that can differ.

As to Oxycontin, at this time there is no generic. The only time released formulation available is the name brand, which are all manufactured by Purdue Pharma.

The FDA classifies this medication as a narcotic analgesic, so it has the potential to be habit forming and may cause side effects, such as nausea, dizziness, drowsiness, dry mouth and constipation.

You may have the flu and should get yourself checked out.

Is there anything else I can help with?

Hello Verwon. Im Sorry to inform you but Steve is correct, Purdue Pharma is selling there OP's to Watson. I wonder if they are rejects or just bad batch's of pills. They are Generic Oxycontin labeled as "Oxycodone Hydro-chloride Extended-Release" "Oxycontin"..They have been out for about 4-5 months now in the USA where I live if not longer in other states. I had the exact same problems as Steve with the generic pills. I had to ask my doctor to write name brand only on my Rx in order to get the name brand from Purdue pharma for my prescriptions. I do think the name brand seems a little bit better but not much at all. Its very weird though cause sometimes its like i didnt even take anything and other times its like im nodding off with the name brand Oxycontin. I know what withdraws feel like and I definitely went through withdraws on the generic watson pills for sure without a doubt!!! I think purdue pharma has such a huge inventory of Oxycontin OP's that they really had to do something to move there crappy plastic pills that they ruined when the changed over to the plastic OP. The watson pills are identical in color markings and shape. Absolutely NO difference what so ever in appearance NONE!!!! I was kinda happy when the pharmacist told me they had a new generic Oxycontin cuz I was hoping that they would be somewhat like the old oxy's strength wise that is. Boy was I ever wrong. I do have a old bottle that i could take a picture of from Watson that i could send you Verwon so you can see we are not making this up.

Verwon,
Generic medications are not the same strength as brand name drugs, don't know where you got that info from, you obviously, you have not suffered from chronic pain.

I agree! All meds are not created equal! I am on oxycodone and Oxycontin er. My pharmacy switched to a different oxycodone and it did absolutely nothing for me. Fortunately my doctor believed me and upped my oxycodone To 15mgs 4x’s instead of 10mgs 5x a day. The 15’s are from the same manufacturer as my original 10’s. I do miss the extra pill, but I break one in half if I am having a good day.

Is Oxycontin 20mg a brand name or generic? I am confused. My doctor called my pharmacy with a script last month and they said they didn't have generic, only brand name?

I called my pharmacy and still didn't get a straight answer. He said Oxycontin is both generic and brand. Luckily I don't get those symptoms u suffer with. If you ever find out the answer please let me know. They don't work for pain either just the oxycodone does. he also said oxycodone and Oxycontin r same but Oxycontin is time release. Confusing.

Re: Sam (# 3) Expand Referenced Message

Sam, try calling your pharmacy and tell them to order U17 oxycodone. They work well and are the best I have had in years. I am 69 years old and still have chronic pain. Generics r permitted to lower narcotic in pills by 20%. I have done lots of research. And I have chronic back pain and OA of knees and my left shoulder. I am an occupational therapist who had to stop working because of pain I have.

Re: Verwon (# 1) Expand Referenced Message

Verwon, There is a difference between generic medication and brand medication other than filler, according to a 1984 law, there could be a 20% variance. I wish I could take brand name, my prescription plan will not cover brand name meds, it is medicare.
