Just prescribed Oxycontin op 20 for the first time for chronic lower back pain from two bulging disks that are inflamming S1 and causing severe pain. I've been takng hydrocdone 10-325 for the past 5 years or so along with the injecions. I just took my first dose of Oxycontin op 20 and about 10 -15 minutes after ingesting my heart rate increased tremendously and was pounding through my chest. This lasted about 5 minutes then would return with less severity every 10-15 minutes later for about the next hour. Is this normal? Breathing was ok and I never felt I was going to pass out. Very scary after reading the warning pamplet that came with the script. It did help relieve the pain after the initial side effects but leary on taking anymore.

Hello, Harley! How are you? I do understand, I've had palpitation before and they are quite scary.

However, they aren't always dangerous. In many cases, your heart actually isn't beating faster or harder than usual, it's just that something is making you aware of its beating.

The FDA classifies this medication as a narcotic analgesic, so along with being habit forming, it can also slow your heart rate and cause hypotension, as well as constipation, nausea and dizziness.

It has also been known to cause tachycardia.

It's very hard to guess what caused it, or if it's dangerous for you. Have you consulted your doctor? You should have this checked out to be safe.
