Oxycontin Op 60 Mg Vs Oxymorphone Er
(Newest replies first)

Just switched over from oxy 30mg instant release 6x daily to oxycontin 60mg with 2 30mg IR for breakthrough. Been on this for a long time. I find that I'm very disappointed with the oxycontin 60 it seems to only last 5 hours at the most and I have many breakthrough pains during that period of time. I've heard of oxymorphone ER and want to know if this would be better for me due to opioid tolerance. If anybody can give me opinions on this please do. Thanks.

Honestly, with those of us that are opioid dependent my pharmacist has encouraged the Dr to switch out between at least bimonthly because our tolerations for opiates are high..even switching different medications doesn't break the tolerance but I have found by changing my SR or CR long acting prescription it seems to work better for me.. I have even tried using 2 different strengths of IR Morphine which works but means I'm taking pills all day it seems..I gained 19 lbs when I was in the Opana 10 mg vs Instant Release Morphine 15 mg .. Going off the Opana has helped my stomach a lot and had lost the 15lbs within the first month of stopping. Hopefully you have a PM Dr that is open to discussion because for me that has been a lifesaver especially as shortages occur in Northwest FL all the time
Just FYI, oxycodone does come ir for 5mg to 30mg. I have been on 20mg instant release tabs for 3 years. So taking 30IR twice a day is correct.:).
Thanks for responding and yes I have consulted my doctor about oxymorohone extended release and at the time my insurance did not cover it so we never revisited the subject he just upped my dose of roxyvodone to 39mg 6x daily and I pushed and pushed until he got him to finally do a prior authorization form to cover the Oxycontin 60 mg 2x daily but now that I'm on this oxycontin it is less effective and seems to last 5 hours at the most along with tons of break thru pains. I've been on oxycodone based meds for 5 years now and have developed an opiod tolerance. Just feel like this reformulated oxycontin might come with more side effect than pain relief since that is all I'm experiencing with it. I got back to the doctor in 2 days and just don't know how to approach this I've been thru several different meds trying to find the right one. I go thru 24 hour pain everyday and everything I read about this oxymorohone it seems to be more effective for chronic pain but I know its different for everybody just don't know what to do and losing hope in having a bearable pain level anytime soon. Thank you for your response
First off, the 30mg that you're taking cannot be instant release tablets, the instant release is only available in a 5mg capsule. If you're taking 30mg tablets, then they have to be the regular release formulation, which is a generic for Roxicodone.

And the Oxycontin just doesn't work well for everyone that takes it, especially with the new formulation.
Have you consulted your doctor, yet?
It's really a matter of finding the right medications or combination of medications that works best for you. However, no one can tell you what that is, because it can vary from person to person. The only thing you can do is try a medication and find out how it affects you.

Oxymorphone is another very potent narcotic, it is available as a regular release and a time released formulation. You can find out more at the link I've provided. That should help you decide if it's something you want to ask your doctor about.
