Oxycontin Drug Equivalent (Top voted first)
UpdatedI am currently taking three 20mg oxycontin a day. Due to insurance reasons the Dr wants to switch me to dilaudid or morphine er. Given the choice, which one gives better pain relief and at what dose would be the equivalent to my 60 mg of oxy which is not currently controlling the pain? Thank you.

Dilaudid is the more potent of the 2, so you'd have to take less of it to be equal to your current dose or Oxycodone or to raise it for more pain relief. According to NIH tables, it would only take 7.5mgs of it to equal each 20mgs of Oxycodone.
The FDA warns that these medications carry the risk of being habit forming and may cause side effects, such as nausea, dizziness, headache, dry mouth, and constipation.
Is there anything else I can help with?
HI magnum5471, From my experience, MS Contin 30 mg every 12 hours combined with Oxycodone 10 mg x 4/daily controls my pain levels. Now, you're going from three 20 mg Oxycontin ER, to either MS Contin ER (morphine sulfate) or Dilaudid (4 or 8 mg IR) and we don't know the frequency of the dosage yet, plus you're not getting adequate pain relief from your Oxycontin, sounds to me like you may need more options. A relatively new pair of drugs, Xtampza er, and XARTEMIS XR (oxycodone hydrochloride) have been shown to possibly help some PM patients. This is information obtained from the internet as well as my 6 years as a PM patient, and I've been put on an array of pain meds attempting to find a way to stay comfortable with the least amount of pain as possible, as is the goal of any chronic pain sufferer. I sure hope you can find the meds you need to find the same level of relief that I've found.. I wish you the best buddy..
I was on 15 mg extended release morphine and it didn’t do anything for me. Then I was switched to 10 mg oxycontin and I worked much better. I hear it is a common complaint that oral morphine doesn’t work well. I would go with the dulaudid (sp?). I took 2 or 4 mg of that and it messed me up enough that I didn’t dare drive.
