Oxycodone And Or Morphine
UpdatedI find it ridiculous that sooo many people are messing around with schedule II narcotics yet have no clue to the potency, side effects, drug interactions, etc.. are you people not adults? Oxy is indeed a good 1.5% stronger than morphine and not at all subtle like morphine.. Most doses of Oxy that are between 15-30 mg are IR's not ER (extended release like most morphine)... SO BE CAREFUL AND FOR YOUR LIFE'S SAKE! DO SOME SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH BEFORE POPPING YOUR PILLS LIKE CANDY!! 60 mg of oxy in one release can stop your breathing!

Hello, Nobody! Thank you for the warning you have posted for others.
However, I do want to correct one point. The only instant release Oxycodone available is a 5mg capsule. Anything greater than 5mgs is regular release or time released.
This is a narcotic analgesic, so it has the potential to be habit forming and may cause side effects, such as nausea, dizziness, drowsiness, dry mouth and constipation.
Are there any questions or concerns?
Umm, actually IR oxycodone comes in 5, 10, 15, 20, and 30 mg. I have personally taken "roxicodone" in all of those doses. And yes, roxicodone is IR oxycodone. Are you supposed to be an expert? Please don't reply and tell me roxicodone is not IR either...
You are right. I currently take 15 mg immediate release oxy and have another script for 12 hour extended release in 30 mg. You are right about everything you said as well. My issue is I have to go to an outside pain specialist to get meds at a higher dose than I have now as that's the hospital policy. It has to do with the DEA/Fed's involvement in prescription narcotics which I think they should keep their noses out of. Just makes it more expensive for pain sufferers and paints us all as addicts. Don't get me wrong; I know I'm "addicted" and anyone would be with my disability but that's just the way it is. There's no cure for what I have and treating the pain is all that's left. That doesn't make me a criminal or "common addict"...which I believe is a health issue as well. Painting addicts as criminals is wrong in my eyes. There endth my speech.
What I'm wondering is since the 30 my extended release is only lasting 8 hours and I can't get more immediate release should I just take an extended release when I need it rather than wait with the result being taking three extended per day? Here's the weird part: I'm given about 15 more extended release than I'm being given IR oxy's. Why I don't know and the label doesn't say so. but when I do a physical count every month I count about 15 extra ER than the bottle label says. I mean every month. So my question is: Is it safe to take 3 30mg ER per day once my tolerance has gone up? I know I can't score it or alter it in any way. What say ye?
I am a seizure patient. I suffer extreme spasms and swollen neck and head pain, due to a head injury..i have looked over some replies and statements to using several pain meds at one time. this seems like over kill. How in the world are you to function? The goal is to have meds that will get you up and doing your responsibilities, at the most doing better for yourself and or family.. I and my husband are responsible for my meds. We research and pay attention to what happens to me when taking any pain meds. Please do not over kill your selves. Because then it seems, by some discussions that you are wanting to feel more than just to get up and function. this reply is in no means in a ugly manner, just great concern for all of us who suffer great pain - and for the record, because of theft in our pharmacies and sales on the streets, our laws changed to just about taking away our meds for help, not to feel high. I've read some statements that are just as concerned as I. You're wanting to live, to get relief and be normal to function better for everyone who are in your life to be happier....
What's funny is you are being mean to people and you wrote 1.5% when it is actually 1.5 times stronger; not percent. That would mean 150%! It is so funny when somebody is trying to be an a**hole and they turn out looking like one LOL
100 milligrams of morphine in a pill is about to vicodin 10th which is hydrocodone I'm a pharmacist and ex drug addict I know what I'm talking about you, you clearly don't
B Hughes, the time released (oxycontin or ms contin) can be taken up to three times a day. However, that is something you would need to discuss with your doctor. He/she might try you on a higher dose 2 times a day, instead of placing you on your current dose 3 times a day. That is something for the dr to evaluate, consider and discuss with you. At the worst point during my cancer treatment, I was on ms contin 3 times a day. I was actually started on oxycontin, then in January the insurance decided it would not pay for oxycontin anymore, but would pay for the ms contin (I'm guessing it was because the ms contin was cheaper). So if need be, the ms contin or oxycontin can be taken every 8 hrs. Best of luck!
I take 30mg oxycodone IR and they have 10, 20, and 30mg IR In oxycodone ir form not just 5mg capsules. The 30mg pills are smaller than a baby aspirin. After building a tolerance to it even 2 30mg pills does not help much with the pain. I was taking OxyContin 80mg every 8-12 hours and it worked much better than the IR but I also had 10 mg IR for breakthrough pain. Why would the long acting version work better than the IR even if taken every 4 hours. My insurance quit paying for OxyContin so now febtanyl patch was tried. It also does not work as well as the OxyContin did all by itself. Anybody have any combo of meds long and or short acting that actually works. My insurance will pay for long acting morphine but I'm afraid it will make me tired all the time. Any suggestions? I have arachnodititis, failed back syndrome, spinal fusion, osteoarthritis in both hips/SI joints, and budging disks above my old fusion from 13 years ago at L3 and L4. Fusion was L5-s1 2 bars and 6 screws. The arachnodititis is getting worse and causing more numbness, leg and foot weakness, urination issues, saddle numbness, and both thigh numbness along with excruciating nerve pain in low back down left leg and foot and now right back of thigh that is new. I found 2 doctors in the whole US that specializes in arachnodititis that's it. Surgery may help for a while but may make it worse. New awake surgeries are going on to help burn off certain nerve endings causing pain but the 2 doctors that specialize in treating it are far away from me. I am now disabled because of the pain and weakness/numbness and went from 12 hours on my feet as a nurse to disability and trying to work 14 hours a week is even killing me. Anyone have same issue or any suggestions! I'm willing to try anything at this point as I am young and the sciatic nerve blocks only work to knock the pain down a little for about 2-3 weeks and are exoensive.
Roxicodone 30mg is indeed IR.... That I know it was just prescribed to me after my surgery 3days ago. And on the info sheet From The pharmacy it clearly states it is an instant release medication.....
I have read through so much here and I'm really confused. So please if someone could or is able to answer me with knowledge...I have 15mg of Morph. and I have 7.25/325 Hydrocodone. I have been in pain management for 2 herniated discs and receive every 3 mths in my lower lumbar. I have been on the Hydro. for almost 9 yrs now and injections. I talked to my Dr about the fact that my Hydros. do not work like they use to nor do the injections. It's been a long time and now it seems the pills only work about 3 to 4 hours instead of the 6 hrs like they use to. The Morph. was from a surgery that I had in June. At that time I STOPPED taking my Hydros while on the Morph. I still have 8 tablets of the Morph. left from June. Would it hurt me to take the Morph now? If I took a Hydro. and then after 3 hrs when it starts to wear off take a Morphine to get me through the next 3 hrs till I am allowed to take another Hydro? This is just until I get into my Dr again on the 13th for a new injection treatment for better and longer releaf? I hope this all made sense and I thank you for any advice or information. Thank you
B. Hughes,
I totally agree with you, thank you for being honest. You called yourself an addict, I also call myself one. Most people call them self dependent on their medication, so they are so much better than us. I'm not going to go into my various conditions, bit some days I can hardly move, horrible pain....and my lovely dr. Gives me 15 ir oxycodone 30 pills every 2 months. 1 ...15 oxy does not help for 2 days!
I'm broke because they are so expensive. I just want to be out of pain, I'm 60, a grandmother, great grandmother and I work. Actually I need about 6 30s a day. Dr's treat anyone looking for pain meds like an addict so if the shoe fits i must be one. Do you know how many young people have turned to illicit substances because they can't get a a legal pain pill? I know a few and read the papers everyday on another overdose. This government is killing us! Maybe that's the plan! Ugggg sorry had to vent!
I have chronic pain following a 3-level cervical fusion due to remaining inoperable bad discs in my neck. Ive been on pain meds almost fifteen years. Now I take Opana 40 mg 4x daily plus oxycodone 30mg up to 4 daily for breakthrough. I know - that's A LOT! But I have a very high resistance and actually have cut the Opana in half! The Opana does not make me tired at all.
You are VERY wrong. I am on 30mg tablets of Oxycodone and they are IMMEDIATE RELEASE or IR. I'm also on 60mg of EXTENDED RELEASE or ER M.S. Cotin/Morphine. Maybe you should do some more research and educate yourself before you go giving wrong information.
For those complaining abt their meds not working as they had before... Your tolerance to the med/s has increased. I'm an RSD sufferer & have been on IR Oxy 30 mgs. for 20+ years. What *I* do when my meds stop working is a gentle taper. I.e., instead of taking a whole pill of oxy, I take 3/4 of a pill for a few weeks. @ first (abt a wk) I feel very slight symptoms of w/drawal. After that I feel only a slight diff in pain relief than b4 the cutback, but nothing I can't handle. After 3 wks to a month I'll take a whole pill & voila--pain relief as before. Remember, everyone is different so it may take more or less time for *you* to do the same. NOTE: If you feel a "buzz" from your meds you're taking a little too much. The "trick" is to take only the am't that's needed for pain relief *without* the "buzz." (Legit pain patients don't *feel high* off their meds, only pain relief.) Feeling a buzz & continuing @ that dose causes a more rapid increase in your tolerance & a more frequent need to taper. NOTE 2: Pain patients are NOT addicted to their meds, they're chemically dependent. The diff? The former (also called junkies) CRAVE the med & will do almost anything for a "fix" whereas the pain patient craves PAIN RELIEF. As I've told many a doctor *&* my uninformed family & friends, "You take away the pain & I'll stop the meds." PS: Try to incorporate other modalities WITH your meds to lessen your pain: whirlpool baths, meditation, biofeedback, TENS units *&* distraction. (The brain can only think of one thing at a time.) I know it's hard--RSD pain is intractable & considered the highest of chronic pain on the McGill Pain index. (Even greater than pregnancy!!! My condition was caused by an earthquake. My fieldstone fireplace blasted 8' across the room breaking all but my pelvis & ankle on the right side. But instead of focusing on the quake, I (try to) focus on how lucky I am to be alive... even *with* the pain. Every flower smells sweeter, sunrises & sunsets more beautiful than the last, my dog's wet nose waking me coz she needs to go out... Bottom Line? Find the things/people you're grateful for & (try to) focus o them, not your condition. You're much, much more than just a chronic pain patient! Live your life & find a way to be grateful for your pain. If for nothing else it can make you more sympathetic to others who are suffering. Hang in there, Baby!
To Former Nurse and RSD sufferer,
Thanks for your inspirational post. I'm sure there were many others that read your post , gave them as myself encouragement to keep moving forward in our struggle dealing with our own pain issues. You've found a common ground of acceptance and peace mentally and physically with living day by day, a day at time though, happy to just be alive in this world. God bless you, and watch over you, as you continue being strong and a ray of light to others suffering from pain.
I totally agree with ya grandma. I was see a dr.that was given me 8 roxys a day 1 every 3hrs and 2 60 mg morphine every 12hr. I was doing more around the house than ever before .Being in pain and not getting what you need really blows. The place i was going does pill count well in the 5yrs i was goin there i only gotten called 2 times and my family n i was on vacation both times.I find that pretty ironic that they called the 2x i lrft the state. So now trying to find a dr to write what ive been on for 5yrs is a joke.
Can I take half of a morphine tablet after taking 5mg of oxycodone? It's been 12 hours. I was taking up to 4 a day.
Re: youarewrong (# 2)
You are correct. I've had cancer for 3yrs & my dr's started me out on 80mg ER & 30IR. With all the drug addicts he's dropped me to 60ER & 20IR. It's a f***ing shame.
