Oxycodone Vs Fentanyl Withdrawals (Page 3)
UpdatedI have just switched from oxycodone to fentanyl patches. I will be withdrawing from them following sugery. any suggestions as to which is easier to withdraw from? Thanks!!!
I have been on Duragesic 75's and 10/325 Oxycodone for 14 years to treat my chronic pain. all due to a car accident in 1979. My neck is really messed up and the Neurosurgeon would not do surgery back 2 years ago because there was 6 places he could operate. Today I just found out where the problem is and will have surgery the first of the year. I went cold turkey from opiates in Vietnam. I have been clean and sober for 31 years. I wanted to know if anyone out there who has been on the patch and meds that long and how was the detox with it. By the way, you can go on line and order a clear wound dressing called 3M Tegaderm Film # 1626 which is 4X41/2 inch. Abox of 50 cost about 40 to 50 dollars but that stops the patch from falling off. I am from Florida and it works through sweat, showers, etc.
If you have only been on the patch for 2 to 3 months you may be okay as long as you are taking them as directed. I have been on both under medical supervision for 14 years. I am fixing to finally have surgery because the actually pin pointed in my neck where the pain is coming from. I don't know how long my detox off of these meds will be, but to honest with you I am tired of the pain management routine. You will be okay. I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and have worked in the field for over 20 Years.

I am on fentynol 75 mcg, I used to be on 160 mls a day of oxycontin. I didn't feel the fentynol patch, I had to change it every 72 hours. I went crazy in pain. I had a car accident, ended up with chronic back pain, busted knee cap, migraines, I ended in the hospital where a doctor changed everything. I stayed with this new doctor, he is a saint and has much compassion . I have to admit that I made a huge mistake, I picked up the fentynol patch when the pharmacy called and told me it was ready. A red flag came up. Now I don't know what will happen . Help?
I think benzo's are the worse to come off of. I have been on oxy30's for 4 years 240 a month i ran short a few times went through bad wd but starts getting better after 4 days. Zanex 4 mg a day after day 3 with nothing it kick in and i couldnt sleep i was up 4 days had tremmors wanted to die. Had to take 50 mg oxy to drive a car to get to the doc. Benzo's are by far the worse i was day 4 aand it was getting worse seizuers were next. I thought it was from the oxys but doc said it was the zanex.
You will not withdrawl from your oxycodone if you are having your patches put on. Your patch is twice as strong as your pills. Don't put something in your mind that you cant escape. If you are going to stop just oxycodone or the patch, the patch is much worse to withdrawal from. If you do what your Dr says you should not have to worry about withdrawals If you are taking meds just because you are afraid of withdrawals then I would suggest getting professional help in a treatment facility. I went down that road and once I completed a week in sobriety I would not ever have to worry about withdrawals ever again unless I started taking meds again. Its a pretty easy choice. Pick sobriety and never have to worry about withdrawals again.
Ask your family doc for withdrawal meds. I didn't like fentanol alone. It did work better w/a little hydrocodone. Noone will prescribe both even on fentanol pamplete says ....take when narcotic alone doesn't work. I know how you must be feeling. I took a picture of skin irritation from patches under my arm. They took me off & gave me something different. Good luck to you.
Today my dr wrote me 20 mg oxymorphine (OPANA) ER stocks replace my 75 mcg fentanyl patches that WILL NOT STICK due to extreme sweating or my skin I'm not sure. I've been on the patch for about 4 months with 15 mg oxycodone 4-6 times a day for break thru pain. The medicine works by buying the tape (TEGADERM) and having to restick it twice a day and often forgetting to out it back on while waiting for it to dry has gotten too time consuming and led to me being very unsteady as far as my meds are concerned (i.e. It affects depression aggression stress body temp etc...)--so today I gave the nurse the last 6 patches I used to prove to them that they were still basically full of the medicine - my body just stopped absorbing it. While this was the case I used 30 mg of oxycodone every 4-8 hours to be able to walk and function (I have a broken talus bone that is so severely deformed I can't walk without a surgical boot and the use of a cane. I also have a broken l5s1 facet and other degenerative disease, arthritis, avasculsr necrosis nueropathy etc--so my question is this: it might be 5 days before my script of 20 mg OPANA ER arrives at Walgreens and my insurance pays for it and I only have 15 tablets of the 15 mg oxycodone left and 2/3 of a patch left (they kept all my opened patches full of medication and my only unopened 1 but let me leave with the 1 I was wearing --am I going to get really sick? And is 20 mg OPANA ER 1 time a day equivalent to 75 mcg fentanyl? They said he can't give me any more breakthrough meds until my scheduled appointment April 4th. I'm kicking myself for giving them my patches but how else could I prove to them that the medicine wasn't working. I opened the 1 patch and are a 3rd of it an hour ago because I haven't had a patch on for about 24 hrs now except for about 4 hrs today which did nothing--and I'm trying to not take any of the 15 tablets of the 15 mg oxycodone tonight. My fingers are so numb I can barely type this and j can't search google any more trying to find an answer please help!!! God Bless.
WOW, now that is alot of Oxycodone to take in a day. I can't believe an Physician would even consider prescribing that much unless you were on your way out in life with severe pain. I don't even think at that dosage, it would make pain any better(Unless you are obviously doing it for an high)because you didn't mention why you needed that much. As it's been proven that sometimes you can get the same relief with certain dosages and beyond that doesn't even make an difference. Something worth looking into for facts of that theory..
YEAH, 15 30mg of oxycodone is an insane amount, however if he is the one who prescribed you that amount that the fault is on HIM! If you achieve that amount through methods of retaining them elsewhere with other Doctors/Citizens then it's obviously your fault. I just can't imagine an withdraw from that amount in my worst nightmare. LOl
I was on 50 mcg fentenyl patches and became addicted to them I was to put one on every 48hrs so 15 a month and got to wear I would cut them open and eat the jell so of course I would run out before my next appointment and my two sisters and one husband are also on the patches but they don't abuse them and for awhile I would get help from them but it got old and they got tired of my abuse so I have been thru the withdrawal and it is hell but it only lasts three days and the oxycodone withdrawal not nearly as bad and last for maybe 8hrs so when I read it takes people weeks to go thru the withdrawal I can't see that but it is pure hell...
My son passed away after overdosing on fentanyl. I wish they would take that s*** off the planet. I saved his life twice. The third time was fatal.
No question....oxy. Do not use Fentanyl if you can at all avoid it.
What you're feeling is the gas pains
Fentanyl is what they give people at end of life in hospice to kill them without pain. No pain but it could kill u. Welcome to America's murdering medical system.
This is from personal experience tho others may feel different. I used to be on 40 mg x 3 per day oxycodone for quite some time, around 7 years. Any doctor will tell you that this pills burn your stomach and should not take them this long. Anyhow, to back to the original subject, Withdrawals were horrible and lasted 7-10 days when I just stopped taking them.
Recently I was switched to fentanyl patches, 50mcg to wear for 72 hours and one 10mg/IR OXY. Having gone through Withdrawals on both, patches were super intense for 3 days but started getting a lot better after that. In my opinion id much rather deal with WD from patches then pills any day.

Hi Judy, it depends on the amount of both but just keep in mind that Fentanyl is 1,000 times stronger in weight per weight molecules than heroin and most definitely stronger than oxycodone. I have been on both for Pain Management and eventually I was having to have my Dr. RX a patch every 48hts as my body got used to it and I started metabolizing the Fentanyl extremely fast. I would rather go without Oxycodone any day than kick the patches again. I was on the 100mcg/HR which is the highest amount. Another thing is that depending on which Generic Brand you are able to get (they phased out the gel reservoir ones by Acatvis) and now only have Polymer Matrix systems, but just understand there can be a difference of 2.0 entire mg.s within each patch, which is a lot depending on which generic you have in your area. At least in my book Oxy is best. Fentanyl does work better for acute pain.
I am constantly surprised by the fentanyl horror stories. If we are talking about the transdermal version, I have run up and down the 12, 25, 50, 75 mcg ladder a dozen times in as many years.
IV, the stuff that killed Prince, is not even indicated for nonhospital use, so I am clueless.
I wonder from reading these posts if these stories relate to multidrug addictions. Especially benzodiazepines mixed with oral pain drugs. That is the living dead scenario.
I have had zero trouble following doctors orders and changing doses. To quote him "cold turkey is a religious concept pushed by 12 step groups, follow medical protocol."
When I stopped paying attention to the 12 steppers, I was fine.
With regard to the 12 Steppers as you say in your post, no where does it say in the literature about cold turkey but encourages us to use outside professional help. I've been on pain management - fentanyl patch and oxycodone for 18 years and clean and sober for 33 years. As long as you follow doctors directions you will be fine in the 12 step program. If you abuse it, then that is another story.
