Oxybutynin, Wean Off, Side Effects
UpdatedMy 12 year old daughter has been taking oxybutynin (10mg one time per day) and Nitrofurantoin (50mg one time per day) for over a year now. All of this is trying to help her bladder relax so she can fully void - we are hoping this will solve the problem she was having for two years causing recurrent UTIs. We are at a point where we want her to stop taking the medications - we need to see how she does off all of the meds. But how do I safely/effectively wean her off of these meds? We are no longer under the care of a doctor because we couldn't afford the $400 office visit that we were going to be charged just to be told how to get her off the medications. So now I need to know....do I just have her stop taking both meds at once or do I first try to eliminate one from her system, followed by the other? Does the order she weans off of the meds matter? How long should the weaning process take? One week? One month? Or longer? Any information/instruction would be very helpful

It is odd that the Oxybutynin would be used for such a thing, since it is normally used to treat urinary frequency, and may cause urinary retention as a side effect, according to FDA reports, but I am not a doctor, and if it has worked for her, it is best to follow her doctor's advice. Other side effects are listed as possibly including nausea, dizziness, and vomiting.
Why do you want her to stop taking the medications? Neither of these are habit forming, but she should be able to just stop them, without a problem, unless her doctor advises otherwise.
Is she on any other medications?
Re: Verwon (# 1)
I have been taking oxybutynin for a couple of years. My doctor wants to do a nerve implant. I had to be off the meds for 2 weeks before the procedure. I went off the meds cold turkey, and lo and behold, my symptoms were no different without the medicine. About a year ago I bought a Squatty Potty on Amazon. What it does is raise your feet while you're on the stool so you can more effectively empty your bowels. I thought it can't hurt to see if it worked for incontinence. I began doing my Kegals while using the squatty potty. I don't know if that has made the difference. Leaning forward has also helped to empty bladder better.
