My cousin was prescribed this drug for a minor back problem and got addicted. He tried to stop tons of times. He died last summer of mixing the drug they gave him to help him quit with this drug. I warn anyone out there, please do not take this drug no matter how much pain you are in!

Actually, when used properly under a doctor's supervision this is a very good drug to handle chronic pain conditions. It helps many people who have exhausted other treatment options.

I am very sorry to hear about your cousins death, a true tragedy and one of many that have happened due to misuse of this drug.

Oxycontin should NEVER be prescribed for someone who only needs short term pain relief for a minor problem. It should also NEVER be prescribed for patients who are not already opiate tolerant or for anyone who has shown prior addictive tendancies.

He should never have mixed the drugs, and I am sure he was warned about the dangers of doing such. You are also warned about such things everytime you get a prescription filled in the patient advisory information.

Your family suffered a terrible tragedy and unfortunately, it was one that was entirely preventable. A little closer monitoring by his doctor or checking him in to a rehab clinic where he wouldn't have had access to other drugs could have saved his life.

Like I said, if used properly, Oxycontin is a miracle pain reliever for those who need it, however, when prescribed improperly or abused, it is very, very dangerous.

Fact is,I had a severe ulcer surgery. Was prescribed 150 OxyContin. This was June 1st,2006. Because taken as directed, (I still have the empty bottle) I WAS NOT ADDICTED!!! I swear to God and the Bible this is the truth. These were small and white. This is when you were able to melt them. Therefore,proven NOT addictive. If it was,I’d have a problem.

It's oxycontin 20mg. I just would like to know what fillers are in them? I heard so many different fillers like gel for one. The other ones I can't pronounce. I know the OPs are the ones with these chemical fillers. Are the fillers dangerous?

I absolutely agree that although OxyContin has a very high abuse potential, if taken properly and prescribed by a Medical Doctor it is a very good drug if used correctly and stopped correctly! I have prescribed this many times before and I follow every patient closely and when it’s time that it needs to be discontinued I ween them off very slowly!
