Over The Top Appetite After Taking My Lexapro Dose
UpdatedOMG! Increased from 15mg to 20mg of brand Lexapro which I take prior to bed... My food cravings and appetite are through the roof after my dose. I want to eat in the middle of the night! It's off the chart crazy. I'm fine during the day. But NOT after my one evening dose! Any ideas to help me curb my middle of the night eatting ? ... chain myself to the bed, is all I have come up with. Sue

Hi Susan,
Something you might want to consider is adding more protein to your diet, since studies suggest that it can help curb your appetite and reduce snack bingeing throughout the day/night. I've also had success trying this out for myself and can vouch for how well a higher protein diet diminishes cravings. Since I eat primarily vegan, I tend to opt for plant-based protein powders and have 2-3 shakes a day in between other meals and before bedtime. This allows me to consume just a fraction of the sugar/fat and still feel satiated. So if this sounds like something you're able to implement into your everyday lifestyle, another important thing to note is that plant-based protein is reported to be much easier on the kidneys than animal protein.
Does anyone else have some suggestions to add?
Thank you for your informed reply and taking the time to help! I'm off carbs for the most part, eat fresh veggies and protein everyday for most meals. I try to keep away from high carb veggies, fruits and diary. Eat some beans but only in small portions and only once a month. Lots of fresh catch fish too. My diet is really clean... can say I've eaten fast food for at least 10 years, probably more. However, refraining from a few glasses of red wine or vodka drinks a week isn't one of my strong points! (I'm sure that's not helping in my plight! I have found a supplement I'm going to try starting before dinner tonight ... gymnema Sylvestre. Its 'suppose' to help with blood sugar spikes! So we shall see what happens??? Most sincerely thank you again, Sue
Hey Susan,
Just wanted to thank you for taking the time to post back. It really sounds like you have good control over your diet. Something I thought was interesting though, is that on the webpage for the US National Institute of Health, they actually list "decreased appetite" and "increased thirst" as two general side effects of Lexapro.

I know when it comes to "increased thirst" or dehydration rather, this is one thing that can increase the sensation of feeling hungry all the time, when in reality all your body may need is more fluids. That's really the only discrepancy I can find relations to as far as increased hunger is concerned, but I'll look forward to seeing any future updates you might have after trying out that supplement for managing blood sugar spikes. Nopal Cactus is another great supplement I've heard of that supposedly exhibits similar properties.
Hope you have a wonderful rest of the evening!
Awesome information, thank you again! :) Sue
