Side effects depend on a number of individual circumstances: (i.e. duration you've been taking the given quantity of this drug, individual health prior to taking the drug, any many other factors that are related to one's vulnerability to the pills effects)...that said, no one can tell you if you going to get side effects from taking 4 of these pills that you were prescribed, except possibly your doctor who prescribed them to you. Even then, he may not know, because everyone's physiology is different. One may say that you have a high chance of experiencing side effects soon if you have consistently been taking this drug. To answer your question, yes, Metronidazole can be taken for a UTI. However my research shows depending on your specific UTI condition it is best for Urethritis: swelling and irritation (inflammation) of the urethra.

Alternatively, Ciprofloxacin appears to be the antibiotic of choice for most UTI's, based on info I gathered.

Taking 4 500mg pills at once (2 gram dose)is a common dosage regimen for this medicine when used for Bacterial Vaginosis.

The medicine tastes horrible and may upset your stomach if you dont drink enough water.
