Otitis Media With Effusion And Smokin

Updated

I am an 18 year old healthy male with no previous ear infections, only the odd cold. I've had the symptoms of Otitis Media with Effusion, OME, a buildup of fluids in the middle ear and eustachian tube, causing pressure behind the eardrum - feeling of having blocked ears, slight balance problems and headaches etc - but have only just recently become annoying and I got a diagnosis of it.

The doctor prescribed corticoides to inhale, which he said should take effect within a couple weeks, and if not, adenoidectomy is a possibility.

My question is could this problem have been caused by my occasional smoking over the last six months? I never touched an industrial cigarette, only joints and narghile (hookah). And at a rate of only two or three evenings a month. Basically I only rarely smoke, it probably adds up to less than 1 cigarette a day.

Should I stop even this occasional smoking, could it have bad repercussions on my ears/hearing?

Yes, it is possible. Any type of smoking releases the exhaled smoke and burn-off into the air, where it can easily enter any body orifice, such as your ears.

These types of infections can even be caused by water getting deep in the ear, or other debris such as dust and dirt.

How did it turn out for you? Did it clear up?

I would say, try meclizine for your balance problems. This is now available over the counter. My mother had dizziness from inner ear problems. She used to get a prescription {I Forget the name]. The last time this balance problem happened, I asked my pharmacist about the prescribed drug. He said "don't worry about the prescription, It's available otc now. Sure enough, she tried it and was better quickly!
