Opana/oxymorphone Pharmacology

I would like to know why Opana ER is so powerful? It comes in 10, 20, 30, & 40 mgs. I took this medication once and it made OxyContin feel far inferior as an all around mood enhancer and pain reliever. What is the difference in the pharmacology from OxyContin to Oxymorphone?

It is just a different medication that is stronger than Oxycodone.

The FDA warns that it carries the risk of being habit forming and may cause side effects, such as nausea, dizziness, headache, dry mouth, and constipation.

Years ago, I remember Oxycontin being the most powerful one available.

Oxymorphone is to morphine what oxycodone is to codeine. There are many stronger ones then oxymorphone like fentanyl. Some of the hydrogen atoms are replaced with oxygen and it binds to receptors better making the drug more potent.

Verwon, Cutting and pasting random bits of info off the "for consumers" section of the PDR isn't going to help people. Oxymorphone is strong because it has a strong binding affinity to mu-opiod receptors in your brain. It also binds to opiod receptors in the GI tract causing constipation which generally goes away after a week of continuous use. The oxygen atoms on the oxymorphone are more electronegative than the Hydrogen on the oxycodone molecules and hence why they work better.

Quick question, are you or have you ever taken this medication? I have been for yrs, now and my doc dropped me to the 20mg ER's from the 30mg ER's. And when I tell you their is a HUGE difference from the 30 to the 20's!!! I find myself short at the end of month cause it's not even a 2 to 1 ratio. More like 3- 20mg ER's to get same relief as one 30mg ER it's so sad
