Opana Er And Oxycontin Op (Top voted first)
UpdatedOne year ago my pain mgmt doctor put me on Oxy OP but it ripped up my gut. Then he switched me to Opana ER and it too caused horrible gut pain. I read that the new formulation was basically some kind of plastic or polymer to keep it from being misused by people who want to abuse it.
Because I could not tolerate these medicines my doctor decided to just let me continue to use hydrocodone 10/325 for several months since it worked fine for me. Now he's telling me I have to go back on either the Oxy Op or Opana ER, or another one (can't remember the name of it but it starts with a N) and use hydrocodone for breakthrough pain.
What is in it that makes this so hard to digest and hurts my stomach so bad? I don't understand why the doctor wants me to go back to one of those meds since he knows I cannot tolerate them and the hydro is doing just fine. Why would he do that? If these medicines cause my gut to hurt so bad how is that going to help me get relief from my back pain since I cannot take them?
I wrote to Global Pharmaceuticals today because I read on some other forums that they make a generic version of Opana ER without the "plastic" inside of it. They sent me an email with a list of inactive ingredients but I cannot tell if the ingredients are the same as the Opana ER.
Does anyone know if this generic version by Global has this plastic, or whatever it is, that makes it hard to digest and cause stomach pain? Is this generic brand readily available in pharmacies and will the pain mgmt doctor allow their patients to use this or will they insist that they only use the name brand Opana ER?
Any input and suggestions would be greatly appreciated. If he forces me to go back on one of the ER meds I will not be able to do it since I cannot tolerate them. My gut it too sensitive for these harsh medications. Thank you.

Hi Gino,
All doctors have a different way of going about prescribing something, so there's really no telling ahead of time what the pain management doctor will allow you to use, in contrast to whatever suggestions they might insist upon. I would just make sure that the doctor is aware of your concerns, so they can make a more informed decision when choosing a particular manufacturer's product.
Is there any way that you can post back here with that list of inactive ingredients that Global Pharmaceuticals had sent you?
From there I can probably get a better clue as to what it is that may be causing your stomach pain.
I hope this helps!
Hi David,
Thanks for responding to my question. I copied and pasted the email I got from them. Unfortunately, it isn't in the chart form as they sent it as I could not get it to line up the way it was in their email, but it still lists everything that's in them. Does it appear to have the "plastic" in it (or whatever it is that makes it so hard on my gut)? Wonder if the polyvinyl alcohol is the same stuff that makes it hard to digest?
Thanks!
Gino

They use an epoxy resin. isnt that wonderful!. On the oxicontin, it is called rmoxy. So if all of us were to go to the hardware store and buy some epoxy resin and ingest very small amounts of it, we could see who's gut hurts first and then we could see who develops tumors and other complications like cancer. Just try to get through the day without always thinking and hurting with pain. Rocks
